Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
Charlie made up this "retro" 4 BL carb, intake and fuel pump system for me to install on my 1947, 59AB. Carb is an old Rochester from the early 1950's, old Sharp 4 BL intake and an old "combo" fuel pump.
Hope to start the install soon. Updates to follow. VA ROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmm! |

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
That's the perfect carb for any flathead 4 Barrell intake I always have a few in stock for similar conversions.

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
Been running one for 35 years on an Edmonds intake. I recently came to posses a 1957 283 'Power Pack" version. Much improved carb vs the 55 Buick I had. Thankfully the float bowel and lid are interchangeable.
Much improved accelerator pump, venturi boosters and secondary air valve. My motor (basically stock duel exhaust and Chev type distributer liked 1" of spacer between intake and carb. If your not a purist this would be the carb to use. |

Gene, I'm a little fuzzy on these things, so could you clarify something for me? Are all of the carburetors you are referring to here Rochesters? I know some Chevrolets had Carter WCFB's and some Buicks had 4 BBL Strombergs, so I want to make sure I understand what you are referring to. |

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
Yes Charlie and I are referencing the Rochester 4GC. They are the ugly sister to the 2GC's you like to run.
I was going to go with a WCFB but I got looking at them and they were pretty complicated. The Rochester is simple enough even I can work on it. How is life in Minnesota? . |

Life in Minnesota is good, but we're sharing the heat wave like everyone else. I am 20 Miles north of Brainerd and it was 96 here yesterday and 94 today. Luckily, I have found out that if I am super careful about keeping the doors shut as much as possible on my shop, I can keep the temperature inside below 70 all summer. That helps a guy keep on top of his projects. |

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
While we’re talking these types of carbs....if I post a couple of pics of a set I have, can somebody have a go at identifying them...I know they’re Carters.....I think they’re a dual quad pair.....
Thanks.....Mark

Flatford8, you may want to contact Jon Hardgrove at the Carburetor Shop in Eldon MS. He is very knowledgeable.

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
It's not real easy to tell without seeing the other side of the carbs and the throttle levers. The first one with the vacuum secondary diaphragm housing is either a '56 Mercury 312, or a '57 Lincoln 368. Could also be a mid 50's Chrysler Hemi that also used the Carter WCFB with vacuum secondaries.
The second picture is also a Carter WCFB and has no choke or drilling for the choke shaft. Pretty much has to be the secondary carb for a '56 through '61 Chevy 265 or 283 small block. Like I said, seeing the other side is a major clue. I assume the part number tags are missing. Sal |

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
The one with the choke has “1273 cast into it and a triangle tag that says “59”, the other has “1310” and no tag. I have an Anderson 4bbl manifold that would need an adaptor to use these. I “assumed” they were a set because one had no choke and be used as a secondary.

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
The carb wit the vacuum secondaries does not have the throttle lever like '56 Mercury or '57 Lincoln used. Best gues is mid 50's Chrysler hemi.
The carb with no choke does not have a Chevy style throttle lever, so I woud say maybe a secondary carb for Cadillac or a '57 392 Chrysler hemi. Both of thos cars also offered two four barrels in the 50's. the casting numbers don't really help solve it unless an expert on them. There was never a 2x4 setup that used both a mechanical secondary and a vacuum secondary carb is the same set. Sal |

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
Thanks Sal!….. and my apologies to 47topless!…..it was not my intention to hijack his thread!… I know little about carbs and am trying to learn when I get a chance. The guy I got them from was a Hemi-guy so the Chrysler idea is probably correct…..again, Thank you !!!!

Re: Charlie NY 4 BL retro install
Charlie NY wants me to provide lots of air to this carb when running. CFM !!!!! An original, early 50's "batwing" style should work well.
