Default Do any of you smell a rat here?

I found this ad on Craigslist and am suspicious. About a month ago this same person had an "immaculate" 1930 coupe for sale on Craigslist for, as I remember, about $10,000. That ad had many pictures of a very nice BLACK 1930 coupe and read almost word for word the same as this ad. I checked with E-Bay and they have no record of this person or the e-mail address. The car was never listed on E-bay. So giving the benefit of the doubt to this person I have to ask how do you use E-bay Motors without listing the item? I thought about reporting the ad to Craigslist but do not want to cause this person undue trouble if the ad is legitimate. So what is you opinion other than if it is on the up and up it is one heck of a deal!!

Hey,

I'm selling it at this price of $6,000 because my husband died 2 months ago (he had a heart attack) and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it a.s.a.p. No damage or hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained... I have a clear title, without liens or loans on it, under my name. Me and my son decided to sell the house and we moved to my parents house in Twin Falls, ID trying to start a new life. We need to meet up to my parents place or I can arrange delivery - it will cost the gas money.

I want to use eBay Motors services (5 days of testing prior purchase) for the safety of both of us so if you’re interested in purchasing, please provide me your full name for the bill of sale, your full address and a phone number so I can notify eBay that you're selected as my possible buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

I look forward to hear from you!

Thanks!

P.S. I have attached the pics to the email, the specs are below:

1930 Ford Model A Deluxe Coupe

This Coupe is all steel with recent yellow paint and black trim. Like new tires on yellow wire wheels. This Ford starts and drives like any conventional car with 3 speed floor shift. Bright work is not show but very presentable. Interior is correct Lebonny rib-cord with black leatherette in rumble seat. Engine recently serviced and totally detailed with alternator upgrade. Runs and drives as new - very dependable.

Rumble Seat
Rear Mount Spare
Seat Belts
Directionals
Dual Cowl Lights
Chrome Eyebrows
Spartan Horn
Dual Step Plates
Dual Tail Lights
6 Volt Alternator (upgrade)
Upgrade Shocks

http://pages.motors.ebay.com/buy/security/

fits alot of what they warn about. My guess is once they get you hooked they want you to send them money for gas to get there for you to look at it, promising to use ebay protection, big hurry to sell, price well below normal - too many flags...

I agree. The way the ad is written has many red flags, as others have noted. The casual introduction, the personal information (too many memories, death from heart attack, etc) all scream scam to me. The internet has made scams so much easier, unfortunately.

Have seen a few scams on Craigslist and EPay.

https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx

this is how to report scams, it helps track down the perps.

Scam.

Most woman don't know this much about cars and transfers.
You don't need ebay to be safe.
She doesn't need your info to give to ebay.

Buyer beware. Buy in person only.

The description of the car is from someone in the know. Most women do not know to use words like (bright work) to describe chrome. What's the odds she did? Very low imo.

This exact scam has been going all around the country recently. The car may exist but believe me the seller in this case does not have possession of it.

You can play with them for awhile. tell them you have a relative nearby that wants to see the car in person. The excuses will start flowing like water at Niagra Falls.

I answered an ad like that once for a car hauler. Almost exact wording other than the discription. Wanted me to deposit money in an their escrow account that would be released after they delivered the trailer and I found it be as advertised. I am sure there was no trailer. The alarm bell went off because of the personal information request.

Scams we should all be aware of: they send a check for too much , Microsoft calls you to fix your computer. Nigerian prince gold emails. Someone requesting money for a relative of yours in distress.

Maybe we could give a little payback. The ad is on the Seattle Craigs List site and the post id: is 6371482875. Check it out, click the reply button and ask for additional details then see the response the seller will send.

We should respond with this:

I would like to buy your car for 500.00 more than asking, please take it off
craigs list and give me your contact information and I will have a certified check sent to you right away. I will have my transportation company contact you for
shipping

This is the response I got seven times to my last craigslist add for a used
furnace. I responded that they can come and get it for free and if they like
it they can give me what ever was fair for it or another one was if you need
it that bad I can give it to you I don't need the money that bad. This was following a few email about certified checks and the what not. I didn't have
any responses after I said they can have it for free.

This person uses more than just model A's. There was an ad for a 50's pickup in NY with very similar text. I contacted them, and they wanted me to send a certified check deposit to an address in GA. of course I didn't do it, but it is an ongoing scam. I reported them, but nothing happened. It was listed in Albany, NY

Agreed. I was recently ready to buy a 3910 Ford tractor at a very low price from Craigslist. Similar scenario: Woman's husband died, selling out and moving to OK to live with mother. Sounded good until the EBay story was announced and I finally wised up to the scam. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is".

Funny. Standing Elk, I saw this today on craigslist and had to find out more. Here was the reply. Sound familiar?

https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/...393993065.html

Hi,

I'm selling it at this price of $6,000 because my husband died 2 months ago and it brings me bad memories and that's the reason I want to sell it asap. No damage or hidden defects. It is in immaculate condition, meticulously maintained. I have a clear title, without liens or loans on it. Me and my son decided to sell the house and we moved to my parents house in Eagle Point, OR trying to start a new life.

I want to use eBay Motors services (5 days of testing prior purchase) for the safety of both of us so if you’re interested in purchasing, please provide me your full name for the bill of sale, your delivery address and a phone number so I can notify eBay that you're selected as my possible buyer and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure. I look forward to hear from you. Thanks!

P.S. I have attached the pics to the email, the specs are below:

Body Type : Roadster
Miles : 18,040
Transmission : Manual
Drive Type : RWD
Exterior Color : Green
Interior Color : Black
Fuel Type : Gasoline

Is it possible that this listing is genuine and that the listing on the stockton craigslist is the fake with the information and picture lifted off the genuine listing. Either way it is Buyer beware.

Ten years ago I bought an antique clock on Ebay here in the UK. A couple of years back I decided to research the maker's name. There, lo and behold was my clock listed on Craigslist in the UK, Canada and somewhere in Scotland....the mind boggles

It surprised me that they're using the name of a real auto museum, which could bring legal action against the seller , if he could be found.
I think the FBI probably has a big stack of these sort of things.

I saw I nice Model A on Ebay. One picture showed the car with a cornfield in the background. i drove to see the car. About 3 days later, I saw the same picture on a Model A's for sale website. It had moved to a different city with different contact information, and the price was a steal.

Just last week I responded to an add for a 1941 Cadillac fleetwood in really good condition, that was listed in our local craigslist. I did think the asking price was a bit low but decided to send e-mail and go look at car. I too got the response to; send me your e-mail address and i will contact you later with more pictures of car. I reply with; I already sent you my e-mail when I responded to the add, for more pic's and location to view car in person.. they never got back to me so i flagged the add on craigslist

Too good to be true? Another super deal on Craig's list. 1929 Tudor. Same $6,000 price tag. Find at: https://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/d...419291559.html

This is an easy one. An older lady would never say or write "Me and my son". She would phrase it "My son and I" which would be the correct grammar!

I have a set of Mustang wheels on Craigslist right now. As always, when I put something up there, I get a rash of emails and texts all worded about the same:

"Hello...I'm interested in the said price of the item ( ) and would you accept a check as payment once it clears your bank then I will have someone to pick up?"

Another:

"I'm interested, Can I send a cashiers check for the sale, Once check clears and you have your cash I will arrange pickup."

Obviously scamma lamma ding dongs. But how does this scam work? If the check clears, it clears, so how do they rip anyone off? Do they beg to take the goods before it clears?

The thing is with cashiers checks, how long are you going to wait till you know that the check is really good? A week, a month, 6 weeks. I have heard that sometimes it takes a LONG time before they find out that the check is counterfeit.

From Craigslist:

Avoiding Scams

Deal locally, face-to-face —follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts.
  • Do not extend payment to anyone you have not met in person.
  • Beware offers involving shipping - deal with locals you can meet in person.
  • Never wire funds (e.g. Western Union) - anyone who asks you to is a scammer.
  • Don't accept cashier/certified checks or money orders - banks cash fakes, then hold you responsible.
  • Transactions are between users only, no third party provides a "guarantee".
  • Never give out financial info (bank account, social security, paypal account, etc).
  • Do not rent or purchase sight-unseen—that amazing "deal" may not exist.
  • Refuse background/credit checks until you have met landlord/employer in person.

Answer: Forgeries. I suppose that was predictable.

In our area for safety's sake, local police and fire departments recommend completing the transaction at their headquarters. Also scares most scammers off.

Most people confuse when cash is available to you in your account with when the funds can be pulled back. People deposit the item, then see the cash in their account and send the item a week later it bounces. These almost always end up with them sending too much money to cover shipping and postage and asking you to send the excess back. They are usually a lot more interested in playing the cash game than actually getting your parts.

it always amazes me and scares me how quick they blow into the wind when you mention meeting at the police station or i use a local gas station on a busy road where the state, city, and county cops hang out and get their coffees. Once you mention the fact there is a high police prescience they seem to blow away into the wind... legit people wont be scared and should prefer to meet in those places. Biggest rule is do not give any hints on where you live nor have them come to your house.
