Question New Cast Aluminum Fan

I just installed a new cast aluminum fan from Snyders on my brothers 29 pickup and when I tighten it down it binds up. I think the inside hub of the fan pulley is rubbing against the neck of the water pump. Anyone else have this problem? I put one on my 30 coupe without any problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Several people have posted that they have had to grind some off the water pump to gain clearance.

What did Snyder's say when you called them?

Mine did also, I just ground the casting flash off the water pump and it cleared.

A few weeks ago we tried fitting one to mine. It's a leakless pump from the late 80's. It hangs up on the impellar shaft so that about 2 threads show. It DOES fit perfectly on another orig pump shaft. SO with that said (and ck'ing Vince's site and discovering many diff shafts and differences) the orig (late 31) fan was closely inspected and re-installed. Sometimes the simple replacement of a part isn't.

Grind the wp and then test spin before you put the belt back on. Be sure you tighten the nut to its final position before you spin. May take a few grinds before its good-to-go.

Exactly what it was! Inside fan hub rubbing water pump nose. Another water pump with a smaller nose worked fine.

I LIKE that. The white-out dries to a sort of "crinkly" consistency which you can take off by rubbing with a rough rag or smooth scotchbrite afterwards.

Good idea!

Mantta,
There's usually plenty of meat on the front of the pump in those cases.. you can grind of the leading edge of the pump ( bevel it a little and it will usually do the trick...

Just finished filing off the surface on my original water pump housing in order to install the repro aluminium fan. I put a spring washer under the nut - is this OK?

If you have room I would use a thin steel flat washer under the nut, then use the cotter pin in the castle nut.

I had to grind on my pump as well when I put the fan on.

Why would a repro fan, being sold from a major vendor require owners to file metal off their water pumps ? Poor quality, that's why. Instead of "fixing" their mistake, everyone should send their fans back to the dealer and demand a correct fitting fan. Nothing less. Customers continuing to fix other's mistakes enable continued poor workmanship of repro parts.

There are a lot of non-Ford replacement pumps in use with differences in the castings. Some are very unique and beefy to very wimpy in design. I would not go to blaming poor design or workmanship of the fans.
