New Cast Aluminum Fan
I just installed a new cast aluminum fan from Snyders on my brothers 29 pickup and when I tighten it down it binds up. I think the inside hub of the fan pulley is rubbing against the neck of the water pump. Anyone else have this problem? I put one on my 30 coupe without any problem. Any suggestions?
Thanks! |

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Several people have posted that they have had to grind some off the water pump to gain clearance.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Mine did also, I just ground the casting flash off the water pump and it cleared.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Grind the wp and then test spin before you put the belt back on. Be sure you tighten the nut to its final position before you spin. May take a few grinds before its good-to-go.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Exactly what it was! Inside fan hub rubbing water pump nose. Another water pump with a smaller nose worked fine.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
I LIKE that. The white-out dries to a sort of "crinkly" consistency which you can take off by rubbing with a rough rag or smooth scotchbrite afterwards.
Good idea! Joe K

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Mantta,
There's usually plenty of meat on the front of the pump in those cases.. you can grind of the leading edge of the pump ( bevel it a little and it will usually do the trick... Larry |

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Just finished filing off the surface on my original water pump housing in order to install the repro aluminium fan. I put a spring washer under the nut - is this OK?

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
If you have room I would use a thin steel flat washer under the nut, then use the cotter pin in the castle nut.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
I had to grind on my pump as well when I put the fan on.

Re: New Cast Aluminum Fan
Why would a repro fan, being sold from a major vendor require owners to file metal off their water pumps ? Poor quality, that's why. Instead of "fixing" their mistake, everyone should send their fans back to the dealer and demand a correct fitting fan. Nothing less. Customers continuing to fix other's mistakes enable continued poor workmanship of repro parts.
