Default Broken greyhound leg repair

Has anyone repaired a broken off greyhound leg? What did you use to reattach it?

I tried everything I could think of to repair a broken off tail, nothing satisfactory.

If all else fails, try Gorilla glue.

My Belgian Malinois got hit by a pickup and her leg was hanging by just the skin. $11.000.00 later she is as good as knew and catching Frisbees again. My '34 pickup build got delayed by a couple years. That money would have finished it I can highly recommend Mallory's' veterinarian but he is expensive, and I don't know if he works on pot metal tails. You might just have to live with a greyhound with a cropped tail.

I found this Greyhound info but it's missing the words "Early Ford" and "pot metal".

My understanding is that greyhounds sometimes get so happy theybreak their tails smashing them against a wall or something. If that happens, the vet tends to amputate since it's painful and can't heal right. Google "greyhound happy tail" or the like and you'll find a lot of sites.

Tail cropping in racers is not common practice. It helps keep their balance (see cheetahs) at top speed. My guess is, like any other injury, it disqualified your grey from racing and they retired it. I love my Grey's tail. She sometimes whips me with it when she shakes water off after a bath but it fits her well.

Seriously, pot metal can be expertly welded or soldered I'm not sure which method they use. I've seen rare vintage Ford dealer license plate frames broken in pieces and repaired so well I could not tell they were repaired but it was like $400.00 for one frame. It would be cheaper to just buy another greyhound. But if it was original to the vehicle, I would want to save it too. You might drill the greyhounds' butt and tail with a dremel and put a small pin in it like a drill bit and epoxy it together. I don't remember how small those tails are.

I was headed to a car show this morning, had to pass through a gate in my housing development. I was slowing down with the brakes applied as I approached the gate, all of a sudden I heard a pop and the pedal went to the floor. I didn’t react fast enough to pull the emergency brake and drove through the gate, knocking the gate arm off. It had plastic break away screws so no damage except breaking the leg off the greyhound. I’m so thankful it didn’t happen out in traffic.

If the broken pieces fit closely together well, krazy glue should be ideal. Just gotta figure out how to keep the pieces tightly together till it sets. Usually only a few minutes.

See your local vet. They do wonders reattaching limbs and heads these days.
He might even be able to race again.

Mine had been repaired previously with some sort of Glue
Was virtually invisable -right up to the point were it fell off last week
Not sure what I will do as obviously lost the broken fragment
I can model something out of two part putty but not sure how I would match the chrome

Maybe there is a market out there for someone to reproduce just the tail and /or legs the full length so that they could be fixed to a stronger part of the body.
Just thinking.

Maybe you could make a tiny cast. That would inspire conversation at a show

If it's made out of brass (probably) Silver solder will do the job.

Tom,

Only the Lincoln radiator caps were made of brass (bronze). In fact, unless it is a Canadian '36, the subject greyhound isn't a Ford part, but rather of aftermarket origin and is a zinc die casting.

Be sure to use release agent so you can get the cast off when the leg heals.

Paul's Chrome plating fixed a broken "pot Metal" window winder handle for me (Of which we had tried a repair with JB Weld et'al in the first two pictures), did a beautiful job.....NOT sure IF they can do a Greyhound but worth a call!!! IF I remember is was about $200 (maybe slightly less) for the repair, chroming and return shipping!!!

I used exterior crazy glue on my greyhound tail 20 years ago. Still holding.

3M body panel adhesive MIGHT work. You can find it at most automotive paint stores. It might be worth looking into.
