Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
In 1932, Ford Australia offered two different model Ford Utes. They were both open, as the Coupe Ute wasn't released until 1934. The Type 304 was the Well Type Ute, while the Type 302 was for the Style Side Ute. These illustrations are from the original Ford Australia Sales Brochure. Unfortunately, the Restorer/Builder of this beautiful 1932 Ford Type 304 Well Type Ute didn't add the Side Boards, like the originals had? Check out what the originals look like from the Sales Brochure. Last edited by mercman from oz; 01-28-2021 at 05:16 PM. Reason: Description change |

The black one with the red wheels is not like the others pictured.
Look at the back of the cab. |

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
I found these earlier photos of the same 1932 Ford Type 304 Well Type Ute with the correct Side Boards attached. Why were they removed, as the Ute now seems very unusual with the low sides. These Well Type Utes were very popular with Tradesmen, as they could carry long lengths of timber, pipes and other items extending into the door area. Question, why were they removed to create a non-original Ute? Last edited by mercman from oz; 01-28-2021 at 05:18 PM. Reason: Description change |

Tubman in post #3 has a direct link to the vehicle on Bring a Trailer. Towards the bottom of his post. Upgraded engine and Mitchell overdrive and videos.

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
I mentioned that these Well Type Ford Utes were very popular with Tradesmen. Check out this 1936 Ford Well Type Coupe Ute carrying a long length of pipe. Notice that there is a metal protrusion attached to the front bumper with the same profile at the top as the rear side boards. That enabled the vehicle to carry lengths of material longer than the vehicle, as the load had this support at the front that you could tie down. The last year that the Well Type Utes with Side Boards attached was available was 1940. While the sides on the 1932 Well Type Ute above was lower than the same model Style Side Utes, this all changed in 1937, when the height of the sides was the same for both the Well Type and Style Side models. |

I had a type 304 RHD I sold back about two years ago. They have a LOT of wood construction in the cab. I personally prefer the looks of the 302

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
Here is a picture of a genuine 1932 Type 302 Style Side Ute that I took back in the late sixties. It was fitted with Model A Ford Wheels so that they could push it around. The guy that bought it wanted to make a 1932 Ford Hot Rod but was not interested in the body, so it was discarded. As Ford Australia didn't offer any Coupes in 1932, the owner of this Ute decided to make his own. He used VW Doors, so I will leave it to your imagination as to how the end product looked. It is an absolute crying shame that this very well preserved Survivor was unceremoniously discarded. What a loss. Notice the high sides on the Type 302 models. While not as practical as the Type 304 models, the Type 302 was the good looking one of the pair. |

The Type 304 on bringatrailer.com looks like it didn't sell, it was bid up to $38,250.

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
This is the end result of the 1932 Ford Roadster Ute shown in Post 17. The Ute body and doors were discarded and a Coupe body was hand built, using VW doors. I don't know if this vehicle still exists, as is decades since I last heard of it? |

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
The ultimate roadster pickup! IMHO, the 302 is better looking as it doesn't have the "window boxes" but the 304 looks better with them than without. They shouldn't be hard to make - even have dimensions in the brochure.
I know there are Model A utes - wonder if it was the inspiration for the US Deluxe Pickup and its big brother, the AA Service Car? |

So the 1931 Model A Coupe Utes came is two sizes? Ford in Australia didn't release the Coupe Ute until 1934. |

Yep, although I'm not sure they'd qualify as "Coupe". The A is standard pickup except for cowl lights and stainless (rather than painted) trim like passenger cars - and of course the Deluxe box and its unique rear fenders. The box sides aren't an integral part of the body like utes. If you look close at the pic, you can see where they're riveted to the cab. The trucks didn't sell well - less than 300 produced. The AA also uses the standard truck cab - same as pickup except for the door recess to clear the sidemount. It's on 131.5 wheelbase so the box is longer. AFAIK, there were no open cab versions of either size. Last edited by CHuDWah; 01-29-2021 at 11:26 PM. Reason: Corrected "excess" to "except" - dang spellcheck! |

Here is a picture of a 1932 Ford Type 302 Roadster Ute. While not as practical as the Type 304, this is model (Type 302) is the much better looking Ute of the two. Notice that this model has the high sides that are level with the tops of the doors. |

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
Big AL from Australia told me about this write-up that appeared in the Australian old car magazine entitled "Restored Cars" Issue 42. This magazine was printed in 1980 and details the story how this particular Survivor was shipped to Ohio. It has to be the same car as is shown in the first photos of this Thread. As you can see, this is an original 1932 Ford Type 304 Utility that originally had the Side Boards. Unfortunately, in the latest photos, these Side Boards have been removed, which is a real pity. |

Re: Australian 1932 Ford Type 304 Style Side Ute
You have to wonder what body type was on this 1932 Ford that back then was practically unwanted. I took this photo back in the late 60's at Tewantin on the Sunshine Coast. It was parked next to a lot of other unregistered vehicles that were used by their owners to cruise up and down the sand on an island near Tewantin, looking for the best spots to fish. It seems that back then, these vehicles were safe to leave unattended for a week or longer, totally unlike today's environment. This 1932 Ford could have started out as a Roadster, Phaeton or a Type 302 or Type 304 Roadster Ute? We will never know. |

It looks like it uses a passenger car cowl and doors. Possibly started life as a phaeton?
