Default 12 volts

My 1930 Fordor Model A runs on 6 volts and I'm very happy with that... But I do not understand why some folks change their Model A over to 12 volts?
Why is that?

A good reason is assesories, a bad reason is crappy electrical connections.

If you drove for 6 hours on a mountain road with standard 6 volt lights you would under stand the need for bright 12 volt lights. Yea, Yea I know there are some bright 6 volt lights.

ever try to charge your cellie on a 6V system?
ever try to run an AC compressor or AC condenser fans on 6V ?

if you do not have these accessories, and do not care about lights, then you do not need 12 V

Personal preference in most cases. Some add accessories that need 12 volts like CB radios and A/C.

With the new reflectors that Bratton's sells lighting is much less a reason then it has been in the past. There have been posts here on how to charge your phone using the 6 volts as well.

Like I said there are several reasons to do so and it is easy to do. So long as they drive them there is no problem if they want to change.

Another reason is that it is easier to find a 12 volt battery if you have to replace one while traveling.

Plus 6 volt bulbs are getting hard to find locally.

I don't have a whole lot of accessories but I do use my Garman GPS with Traffic so I know what the road is like up ahead.

I also have a 50w Sportlite and two 35w Amber Fog Lights (that I use for daytime driving lights).

I also use LEDs for my dash lights, cowl lights and turn signals (amber LEDs in front, Red LEDs in back), all of which are easier to find in 12 volt.

How good do the 6 volt flasher units work? Are they easy to get?

What about the output voltage of the 6 volt alternator?

There is only one reason a Model A needs to be converted to 12 Volts and that"s to add an Air Conditioner!!

How easy is it to get 6 volt headlight bulbs that focus properly without doing a time warp?
