Re: 28 rear bumper width
Do you mean just the bumperette, or the overall outside distance of both bumperettes?

Re: 28 rear bumper width
In reference to this ad...Dunno if this guy is full of it, but the way the ad is worded,
it sounds possibly legit. Just thought I would ask in case I have to take my tape to the next swap meet. I would have thought all bumpers would be the same width because the chassis and tracks are all the same. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261446520...84.m1423.l2649 ( a pair of roadster tudor rear bumpers (1" wider than Tourer-each side) as picutred with bumper irons will freight at buyers expense ) |

Re: 28 rear bumper width
My October 1, 1929 Parts Price List shows A-17784-D for all the 1928-9 Model A's.
D would indicate the 4th design. I didn't realize there were 3 earlier designs. |

As I understand it there were three '28-29 bumperette designs. 1. The one piece bumperette that was used in 1927. It was open ended. 2. The '28 bumperette that has the sharper bend near the riveted section. 3. The '29 bumperette that has a less severe bend near the riveted section. What would the fourth design look like? For some reason I cannot picture a fourth one. Help. Dean P.S. Pooch to answer your question, I think that the guy with the ad is making this up. |

Re: 28 rear bumper width
I still haven't figured out how to do a " multi-quote" here...
Sooo,..... too answer both Tom and Dean, here we go. In the January 1, 1928 Parts Price List it shows.. " A-17784-D...Rear fender guard assy" I think they could have had running changes too the parts(in the drawings), that never got manufactured. I've looked for the different shapes of the rear bumper-etts, I'd really like too see a photo(s) of them side by side! It's not that i don't believe they exist,...I just haven't found any. Dudley |

Re: 28 rear bumper width
Dudley, sorry to say that I don't have any photos to show the difference. Next time you are around a Model A show check the '28 bumperettes versus the '29s and even check the front '28 bumpers versus the '29s. You will see a difference.
It is similar to early '28 fenders. You don't see a difference until someone points the difference out and then it seems so obvious. I don't know why Ford made the changes but he did. |

Re: 28 rear bumper width
I'm glad this topic came up. Now I'll have to compare some of my bumpers to what's on my 28 Phaeton.
Just thought of what D.J. said about his January 1, 1928 book listing the bumpers as A-17784-D, the same as my October 1, 1929 Parts Price List. So, wouldn't that mean all the rear bumpers made in 1928-9 would be the same? Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 04-09-2014 at 11:15 PM. |

Re: 28 rear bumper width
There are three different bumperettes that I know of and I listed the differences in comment #6.
I remember years ago when Fred Gooding had just learned from one of his grand daughters how to send a photo. He sent me a photo intending to show me the difference between the deeper bend '28 bumperette and the less bent '29. I did not see the difference for several photos. "Good guys" can tell which is which by looking at one. It is best to have several to compare. Once you see it you will know. Up till recently I could go out get two bumperettes, take a photo and share it. Now that I have sold most of my parts I cannot do that. Words are a poor substitute. While you look for differences in bumperettes, also look for the earlier '28 front bumper that has a bigger curve at both ends than the '29. |
