Default One of Henry Ford's coal ships has a new life

Henry Ford had a fleet of ships on the Great Lakes. Here's one that has a new life we can all appreciate!

The wheelhouse is a very cool sight, it faces West - the sunsets are great on cool summer nights. There is a park next to it so you can walk up to a fence and look at it or by boat obviously. It sits on South Bass Island, also called Put-In-Bay, which is the village on the island. The island was home to Island Airlines, the shortest airline in the world. It was here that 8 different Ford Tri-Motors over the course of 50 years flew back and forth from the island to the mainland.

Another couple Ford related notes about the island is that Henry had visited the island in 1915 to view the newly completed 352' tall monument that honors those who lost their lives as well as those who fought in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. The other thing of note is that the Put-In-Bay horse drawn fire pumper ended up at Greenfield Village.

Mike, you're obviously a great fan of Henry Ford Trivia! Much appreciated, as would be any further Ford trivia that hasn't made it to the mainstream?

I'd think that today's value of that cargo would far exceed the original cost of the ship!

Alan-

Here's another link to information about the Benson.

http://shiponthebay.com/history.html

Here's some more Ford Fleet "triva" for ya- The wheelhouse of the William Clay is on Belle Isle in the Detroit River at the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. It's attached to the building and is a permanent display. It is open to the public with free admission. I was just there on Saturday.

About 5-7 years ago the wheelhouse to the Henry Ford II was in a scrap yard in Windsor, Ont.

Do you have to be a member to view the information on the site?

don-wi, you can view the info without being a member. On the front page scroll to the News Headlines towards the bottom and go to Henry Ford Dream Vacation Home. Just curious, but why would you not want to be a member of the site? Many of the members on this site are also members on the V-8 site.
