Brake Reinforcing Bands
How long to you keep those brake reinforcing bands in the Weber grill prior to installation?
Thanks Leo |

Long enough you can't touch them.

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
After 5 minutes you can't touch them.
I would imagine that's not nearly enough time. |

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
The metal isn't really all that thick. Get the grill up to 4-600 degrees and 5 minutes would be all you need.

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
I tried heating some bands and unfortunately I didn't heat them enough.
After beating on the bands I found out later I had forced the original steel drums out-of-round, bad! One was saveable the other......... oh' well. I went to new cast iron drums and eliminated that problem. Somewhere I read that the bands need to be "cherry red" before you attempt putting them on. I think they maybe right. Bob-A |

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
Brent,
It has been a while since the fiasco, but one of the drums was bent out-of-round so bad it could not be turned and trued up! I think getting the bands sufficiently hot (cherry-red) is the ticket. Then the normal turn and true would work. Bob-A |

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
When I placed the bands on my drums I used a torch and heated them cherry red. Mean while the drums had been in the freezer for about 2 hours. We still had to beat them very aggressively and yes it took them out of true. Had them lathed at a local machine shop and all was fine. It tighten up the drums so much that the adjuster on the brakes had to be backed way off before the drums would go back on.

Re: Brake Reinforcing Bands
I grilled mine 500-600 degrees for about 1/2 hour. Then I put the drums on concrete and beat the crap out of the bands to get them on. Had to do everything quickly. Made sure I had all the tools in needed at hand. Kind of a nerve-wracking task. I didn't have to turn them in my mind... they stop smoothly.
