so the block is getting magnafluxed and going to max out the bore to build a solid 4 banger. I hear great things about Lion heads..than winfied...and now read about brumfield...
some have "super" to get a bit more compression....love to read your $0.02

If you are after a "solid" engine then build it back to standard specs with maybe the addition of a 6-1 compression head and clean-up bore. They were solid from the factory and lasted this long

true. let me clarify...i am building a motor that i want to get aprox 85-95 HP out of..would not say a "race" motor...and also don't want a OHV ... but also dont want a stock. I have one and it runs great. Using it to get the feel of the car while we build this motor. sorry for the lack of details in the original.

For that much power I wouldn't use a Brumfield or Snyder, I'd use a Winfield.

I definitely don't take it the wrong way but I think he is in the right place. HAMB is a good place but centered on later model vehicles , all makes, many late modifications. The people with the knowledge to answer his questions are here on the barn. His question would get lost on HAMB. MAFCA and MARC (which are centered around the restoration of the Model A) have classes that would accept his vehicle.

I don't think Brumfield has made a head in 7 or 8 years. It's a great stock looking head but you won't be able to find one. I have several of the different compression Snyder heads and I'm real happy with both of them. If your wanting stock looking, that's the way to go. All the others look like performance parts.

Larry stopped making heads in 2008 because of the economy, or atleast that is what he said. Maybe next election will go his way and he will start making them again. I dislike it when business people or poeple in general stop trying to do their best based on who is in office. I worked with a guy in 2000 who quit his job because George W. Bush got elected. He stated that he would not work while a Republican was President. I guesse I never seen the sense in making your family suffer based on your political likes and dislikes.

Brumfield heads are great and they would still sell if he would make them. Just my opinion, Now back to currently made heads for the A. Rod

OK I'll confess, I run a brumfield 6-1 head, 100 overbore, B distributor, B cam, closely balanced engine with clutch and flywheel balanced by Edelbrock. 3:77 rear. That's all. I have a early cam to install if it ever gets opened up. That is the same configuration I had in another engine, 60 over (with an early cam) and could run the L.A. freeways, back when they weren't stop and go, easily.

I also have a Brumfield 6.5:1 sitting oln the shelf. I am going to use it on the delivery with the Stipe cam and oversized valves. I also have a 97 LZ carb, but no intake yet. Rod

Rowdy, Look at your LZ carb, it is likely a "48". On the outside of the right venturi behind the choke linkage there should be some numbers that indicate venturi size. The 97 is 31/32, while the 48 is 1 1/32. You will get more power out of the 48 because it will pass more air.

I'm sorry but you will need to narrow down what you want to have in the end.

A good running everyday all purpose engine, stock works.
A little better up hills, better top speed, high compression head will do.
A good hill climbing engine?
You want a Bonneville racer?
Something in between?

What is your budget, Speed costs, how fast do you want to go?

I'm serious, if you want an answer you can use, you need to let us know what you want to do or else this thread can go on forever with all the possible combinations using a single block.

And I too feel that you would gain additional info on HAMB and the banger section since they specialize in modified cars and engines.

There is a lot more to building a speed engine than bolting on parts. You ought get a copy of Jim Brierely's new book, "4 Bangers and Me" that tells you how to build a mild or hot flathead (and has lots of other info for just plain engine building.) Send him a PM from his avatar in post #13. $20.00 plus $4 shipping. Well worth it. Then you can develop an informed plan for what you want.
