Default Thermostats 59-a new or NOS?

Thermostats 59-a new or NOS?

I would like to install a pair as my engine does not currently have any. Too cold now not to have them. Should I look for a pair of N.O.S. or are the new ones the vendors have ok to use?

thanks in advance.

There are several ways to go, kinda up to you which way you prefer. One way is the Subaru thermostats. The Subaru Justy is what is commonly referenced, but the same thermostats are used in several different makes, models and years. The normal reference you will see is Subaru Justy 1990. They have to be retain someway. You can use wires that catch under the hoses and clamps. Or you can double clamp them (an extra champ just above where the thermostat is in the hose). There are several other methods to retain them.

Another option is the barrel type of thermostats that go in the upper hoses near the radiator.

I tried a conventional new stat (not those JSeery helpfully posted) they were okay but harder to keep seated. The nos versions that I found shortly after have stayed put and performed flawlessly. The longer housing seems to help a bunch with holding position. Either one will work.

I got Stant stats and installed them on top of the cast iron head outlets using a third type of installation method I found on the forum.

At NAPA I bought a foot long piece of straight radiator hose and cut two one-inch pieces off it. The diameter of that hose was selected to fit snugly inside the regular radiator hose. I positioned the pieces to sit about an inch up inside the bottom of the regular hose, and glued them inside. They hold the stat in-place and the hose clamp is installed below them on the flange of the head. Their thickness matches that of the stat flange and so they do not hinder coolant flow. They been in for about 3 years without a problem.

Think this has already been covered several times. Most modern thermostats are sandwiched between two surfaces that retain it. The OEM thermostats fit up into the hose and did not require anything to retain them.

Sorry, wrong use of terms. I meant to say N.O.S. vs. modern.
