Default 8ba engine rebuild

first time build of an 8ba engine, how many out there have had great success with doing the extra drilling at the rear of the engine into the existing oil passage? I am not building a racer engine but as long as it will be apart should I attemp the drilling?

Why would you want to drill into the existing oil passage at the rear of the engine?

One thing I have never heard of are oiling deficiencies on a properly set up 8BA (unlike the "Y"-blocks). Why mess with it?

(I have never considered the bypass oil filter a deficiency the way most of these engines are usually maintained and operated.)

Most folks do it for a partial bypass oil filtration system but drilling into the passage from the pump is not all that has to be done for partial bypass. There are several good threads on here dealing with partial and full bypass as well as the military set up that also had an external oil cooler. Some have good illustrations and photos. If it's not plumbed up correctly, it can cause bearing failures due to oil starvation.

The rear main has a direct passage from the oil pump so 100% bypass has to have an oil feed that bypasses the normal system completely. This is accomplished by directing the oil feed out of the pump through the side of the oil pan. If this isn't done then the system is still a partial bypass. It may be less partial than the original system but the original filter system still bypasses all of the oil over a short time so it works as good as what many other manufacturers had in that time frame.

I wouldn't bother for a mostly stock motor. If you start with a clean motor, use good oil with the original filter and change the oil regularly you will be good to go with no worries.

Like the Beatles sang, "Let It Be". Just make sure cam bearings, rod bearings and main bearings are good.
