Default Open car door check straps

In the JS, the open car door check straps are listed as "5/64 thick moulded rubber belting with a fabric core and had a large colonial grain finish." I haven't seen anything like this on the market. Does anybody know of a better source for original looking door check straps? Thanks.

You are correct that there is nothing commercially available. The repros are nothing close to resembling an original. Therefore one either uses NOS originals, --or makes a facsimile of the original. I can take a picture of an original tomorrow when I get to the shop if that will help you as a visual pattern to make yours out of.

I think Marco has pictures of originals on his website. I know he has posted pictures of them on Fordbarn before. I also need two more good originals for my 28 Phaeton.

Arlen, what are you wanting to use these straps on? Maybe we can find you a suitable alternative to meet your needs.

It's for a 30 Standerd phaeton. I don't do fine point judging but I still like things to look right if possible.

Arlen, check out the Bob Drake catalog. He makes a nice looking repro door check strap for open cars. Very close to the original.

There was a guy that made the piece that goes around the steering wheel.

He made a mold from wood. Sanded and polished it. He then waxed the polished, poured some rubber in the mold, placed the cloth on top and poured more rubber on top. I placed the mold in a vaccum to get out any air and let the rubber set. He remover the part, trimmed the cloth and one would be hard pressed to see the difference between it and stock.

Reproducing the grain would be the real problem. The rest could be purchased on the internet (rubber). Simple yes, easy no.

I once started a thread that asked what nearly impossible parts would we like to see reproduced and the thread went nowhere. I did it thinking that someone might have the time and resources to produce even a short run of parts like the Victoria Association did a few years back with the shades. They found a weaver that using the same colors, patterns, and edging created a run of shades.

Does anyone know the length of the check straps for 28/29 roadsters and phaetons without sidemounts? I looked at Bob Drakes check straps and it appears they only come in brown, used on deluxe roadsters/phaetons I believe. Bob Drake has several lengths available and I would guess the longest would be right for 28/29, but not sure. Would it be possible to stain or dye the brown check straps the more blackish color for 28/29 cars? Any suggestions?

JS indicates 7.5", I believe.

Bob
you just overlooked it. It's the fourth item down. All '30-31 front doors used the same length.
