Re: WOW, a Model A "trike"??
I recently bought a Model A period "Ford Times", a British Ford magazine. Featured within was a Model T trike, design opposite the above...this one had rear axle cut down to nothing driving a centered or close to centered single rear wheel, and a special body to suit. The motive: In England, a three wheeled car was legally a motorcycle, and got much better tax level. Normal Ford were bad news on English taxes because they had relatively large bores, which counted heavily in the tax computation.

Re: WOW, a Model A "trike"??
Forgot to mention, Ford of England actually produced a few trikes! A specialized commercial model was a small tractor type truck based on the small four cylinder English Ford line started in 1932-33...these used a tiny four banger that blended reversed Model B and flathead V-8 design features. The trike had a single front wheel, and was I think designed for maximum maneuverability towing small trailers around docks and warehouses.

"Wild Bill" Gelbke ( creator of the infamous "Road-dog") would be proud.

Re: WOW, a Model A "trike"??
Actually, what would make this rig REALLY cool would be a front tree / forks / wheel from a 1930's H-D or Indian....

Re: WOW, a Model A "trike"??
I've never understood the trike thing. If you want a bike, get a bike. Power to weight, laying it down in corners etc, yes bike make sense. Cars, stability, dry in the wet, take the whole family etc, yes cars make sense. Trikes, the length of a car, can't go through a corner as they will tip out, look ugly, get wet in the rain without the benefits of a bike etc, don't make sense.
Looking at that trike, one thing that looks extremely dangerous is the flat bar connection of the steer rods to the handlebars. Flat bar would not be strong enough in two planes of stress, which can happen during steering. |

That's thinking outside the box.

Hey...to each his own. He probably enjoys his model A+ as much as anybody on here enjoys their A. Not for me...But I'm just saying.

Re: WOW, a Model A "trike"??
As to understanding the "trike thing": When a lifelong bike enthusiast's age or health catches up to him he may no longer be able to climb on and handle that huge two-wheeled machine (they're called "hogs" for a reason!). He still wants to be out in the breeze and bugs so a trike fills the bill. From the seat foward, it's like he is still on his bike.
