Question "B" to "A" timing or is it "A" to "B" ?

"B" block with a "B" timing cover, but with an "A" distributor using modern points. What is easiest way to time this animal with least amount of tools & "expertise" ?

its practicly impossible to correctly time the engine with those parts it will be too far advanced . but i dont think you would hurt anything by fudging it and setting the points so they open slightly after the pindrops in....

Take out #1 plug, use wire or other feeler, find tdc (top dead center) of piston on compression-rotor pointing to #1 contact---time it there like you have pin in for A

Thumbs up Re: "B" to "A" timing or is it "A" to "B" ?

Thanks for the input guys. I might just crank the beast up, loosen the
distributor lock screw. And slowly.... retard the dist. untill it sounds about
right then tighten her back up. She is definitely running to far advanced right now. Like I said ealier I want to use the least amount of tools and "expertise"........LOL. Thanks again.......

Won't work. There is a pin in the distributor housing that sticks
in the head so it won't turn.

The easiest way might be to just install a Model A timing cover. They bolt right onto the B engine. Another way might be to drill and tap a second hole in the Model B timing cover.

Two options to consider:
1) Time it using the Model B timing cover and pin but know that it will be 19 degrees advanced when the lever is all the way up and remember that 1/3 of the way down the quadrant on the on the column is the maximum advance that you would ever set it to while driving. The result is that you would have a manual advance Model-B, which had an initial advance of 19 degrees and a total advance of 32-33 degrees.

2) Find ignition TDC for #1 cylinder, remove the timing pin from the cover and drill a new hole in the timing gear. Then time it like a Model A using the second hole that the pin drops into. Start it and drive it just like a Model A.
I've done it both ways....

Kurt in NJ: Looks like I'll try it your way.

Bob-C: You were no help.....LOL.

Charlie Stephens: I got one, Charlie, I just can't find the critter.

Thanks everybody else too. If and when I perform the sacred act I'll
let y'all know the results.

Hey everybody, I used "Kurt in NJ's" way of timing the motor and it definitely sounds better now. Thanks everybody for your advice.
