Turn signals. I need advice!
I have a '30 Standard Tudor. I am looking to put turn signals on it. I have LED tail lights ( 2 ) and an LED light strip in the rear window. What I am looking for is:
Also... if that isn't enough, my wishlist would include an audible tone and some type of self cancellation. Are there light kits that are solid state that don't use a flasher unit? Does anyone on this forum know who would make sets that encompass all the criteria above? Does anyone make a kit ( or supply components ) to make one? I saw one in Brattons Catalog, but I don't think it does everything I need. Your advice would be a great help. Thank you |

Just my opinion but when you have the headlights on at night, dims OR brights...I dont think you will be able to see the directional light if you use the parking lights as the bulb.
IMHO...test it and see..BEFORE you install the system. Dennis L Oberer Green Bay WI PS: I used my cowl lights and put amber lenses on them. I wonder if it is legal to have directional lights that flash white? DLO |

You might want to look at the two articles on turn signals in the TechTopics at http://www.cedarcreekas.org

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
I don't know about a kit, but you can definitely buy the components to get all those features in something you put together yourself.
The electronic flasher unit should be easy to find (the electromechanical ones don't work with LEDs) as I bought one to install on my bike after i switched to LED turn signals. Another option is a "load equalizer" which is essentially a resistor that allows your old flasher unit to work with LEDs. A buzzer or similar audible alert should also be easy to get. If you need them to self cancel, you might look for places that cater to motorcycles--I've seen self-cancelling signal kits that turn off the signal after a preset (and programmable) amount of time. I'll have to root around in my old email to see if I can find vendors for the stuff I bought... <edit> Here's where I bought the module to do my bike: http://www.pashnit.com/product/signa...s_tristar.html Last edited by dan; 05-19-2010 at 09:04 PM. Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
On my 30 std roadster I use the accessory cowl lights for directionals and the parking lights are still in the headlights. On the rear I have black painted amber VW backup lights mounted in the spare bumper brace holes close to the body.

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
If you have twelve volt you can try a motorcycle system, some of them are self cancelling systems.

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
There are a thousand ways to arrange the lights themselves and it has been written up in many forums. Choose the one you like.
As far as self cancelling, there are many electronic systems that can be adapted. Mostly from motorcycles. Mechanical cancelling systems can be adapted from many different cars. Probably the 56 Ford pickup is one of the easiest especially if you have or are going to put in the same steering box. You just use the 56 column and turn switch assembly intact. |

I think the only thing on your wish list that goes overboard is the self cancelling feature, all the other things are possible.

If you can stuff everything into a small plastic box, put a magnet on the back of the box and stick it under the dash. When you go out to drive, pull it out and stick it on the face of the dash.

This may be the answer to your question. It will work with LED's is self canceling because it has an adjustable timer and it even has four way flashers. I have been using one on a modified Model A for about 8 years and the only problem I have had is a little RF interference. I have the column switch but wish I had gotten the toggle to hide behind the dash, plus it is a little cheaper. This may not be the cheap solution but it is certainly the easy one. On my car I replaced the running light socket in the taillights with one that is dual contact and have flashers that don't turn off one of my brake lights and the light looks normal. |

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
We did an article on the various "kits" for turn signals in the Model A Times Vol 6 Issue 2. Bratton's offers a "hide away" kit with a buzzer.

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
I have one of the kits with the hidden toggle that mounts behind the left side of the dash panel. I really like it much better than the column mounted ones...it is small and totally out of the way, and can barely be seen. But it is also easy to operate...no need to be able to move it onto the dash when using. Mine is not self canceling, but I have gotten used to turning it off after I complete a turn, and mine also works with LED tail lights and front cowl lites.

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
How about cutting the arm in half and rotating the signal switch to a twelve oclock position so the steering column support bracket blocks its being viewed?
You can get a black Signal Stat or $19 imitation Signal Stat switch to do this. Does the 1930 have a dash mounted steering column support bracket like the 1931? Make sure you have the high output bulbs in your headlights as they will have to do all the heavy lifting to make the flasher heat up unless you have one suitable for LEDs. The beeping flashers are also a good idea, particularly if you hide your signal switch as suggested. |

Re: Turn signals. I need advice!
I use the headlight park bulbs and, with a brighter bulb, you can't miss the signal, really bright!
