Default Weiand head

Hi all,

I recently acquired a Weiand head, I have always wanted one but they never seem to come up for sale. Does anybody have any info on these? There is literally no info out there regarding this head. I have read on the HAMB that they were supposedly 7:1 but that is about all I can find. Anybody have anything else they can share regarding this head? When were they made, etc. any help appreciated.

I have a Wieand that is close to 7:1. To really find out, you have to cc the combustion chamber. Displacement will also affect CR if your cylinders are oversized. Add 16 ccs to the chamber volumn for a gasket that is crushed to .050, which is for a Best graphite gasket. The copper gaskets should not be much different. Some years ago I talked to a guy at the company that now owns Weiand and he had actually worked for Wieand back in the day.Said the heads were made in the 50's. His recollection was that they were 9:1, but mine did not cc out to that. I opened up the combustion chamber to give more clearance around the oversize valves and that of course lowered the ratio a bit. I assume your head has no flycut. You need .040-.050 pistom to head clearance which is about normal gasket thickness. I feel better when clearance is closer to .050. Check the piston pop-up. You will probably have to mill some off your piston tops, or have custom pistons made. I do like the head and its performance.

I have a weiand head, it is 8.5 comp ratio, stamped near dist , and on the gasket side under the waterpump (this way you know if the head was cut, comp ratio changed)no flycut for piston top original

They are good heads, copied from the Winfield crows-foot.

There are no stamps on my head whatsoever. This engine is assembled so if there is piston interference I am going to mill the head. Looks like I have to CC the head to be sure of CR as I have no real proof of what they were factory. 9:1 is really high! Lol.

On my head the compression ratio is marked on the head between #2 plug hole and the dist location pin hole(8.5)---- kind of small in the picture, it is also marked in the gasket surface so it would be evident if it was surfaced

I looked in an early 60's Antique Auto Parts, Rosemead CA. "Weiand aluminum
head, can be furnished in most desired compression ratios. Plane finish $36.95"

The 1964 Ford Parts Obsolete catalog pictures a Weiand head although it doesn't say it is a Weiand----it just says" high compression head". The ad says it is available in 3 compression ratios-7.5,8,and 10 to 1 I had one about that same time. I bought it new at the Long Beach swap meet for $25,used it on my car for a while and sold it several years later for $50

Thanks. Very interesting so far. Mine has no marks anywhere. I know it has been decked because there is only a relief cutout for the piston on the number one cylinder, approx. 040. The other three are flat.

You have a bad head, so to speak. There should be the same flycut on all cylinders, or none at all which I believe is the correct Weiand. You have to cc the chambers.

Maybe the original owner built his engine with used parts and had only one piston that needed the flycut!

WEIAND, pronounced why-and, from old HRM magazines. Some of these old heads were not very precision. I had some welding on my Cyclone flathead so had to re-surface it. On a whim, I cc'd the chambers and found the head had been machined on an angle. It took about .015" more on one end than the other to make it right. BTW, that head had no reliefs over the pistons, but mine were above the bore. I use 2 gaskets and had no trouble with it, ran it for many years.

Van,
you might want to contact Charlie Yapp @ Secrets of Speed magazine.
He has chased info on the early speed parts for decades and has lots of archival literature in his files.

It’s not a bad head, it was run for decades. I do believe that the one cylinder was cut for a piston that needed it as the decades of carbon told me this ran for a long time like this.

I am going to see if it needs decked then check my engine and do what is necessary for clearance, and tone it down to about 6:5-1.
