Default Chevy distibutor question for Bubba...

Has anyone ever considered (or did) put a second set of points in the SBC distributor that's widely used in the flat head world? If they did, what would be the timing difference in distributor cam degrees to get a good overlap? (This in regards to the "cluster points" design. I have a couple of earlier SBC distributors with the dual points but they're not as neat as the later ones with the cluster points.

Dont have a answer, but i have a 57 Corvette factory dual point centrifugal advance only distributor 270hp dual quad ( thats a mouthful) that is in a 8BA flathead. Never ran it but wondered if it had any benefit.

It takes the early small cap and fits nice.

I also got one of the later delco distributors for a 8Ba that Charlie NY built.

There are a LOT of dual point SBC distributors out there, so trying to "jury-rig" a second set of points into a single point distributor doesn't make a lot of sense.

Please excuse me if I didn't understand your question correctly.

Of course, I should really be encouraging this sort of thing, because if someone does it, they will have to remove the condenser from inside if the distributor to make room for the second set of points. Then, they become a potential buyer for one of my "Trash Can" condensers. (Nothing looks worse than a stock condenser hanging off the outside of a "hi-performance" distributor.)

Hey Pete,
Mallory and others made dual point conversions back in the day for DELCO
window distributors....quite often on e bay. Someone on the Barn mentioned he has some .
Of course I run the Chevy conversions in my '32 and '41 pickups. Single point
premium Napa points. !2volts...4500 rpm no sweat and if I'm a jerk over 5000 rpm.

Isn't one of the factors of a dual point design long life for the points? Isn't this why Henry put them in all? or most? of the flat head's distributors? Or am I off base?

And yes, I think that a big old fat condenser hanging on a distributor is pure beauty!

Thanks for the comments!

more dwell from dual points means more load on condenser/coil--doesn't?

I disagree; many things look worse, eg; a SBC in any early Ford....

Sorry to get off the original topic, but I had to interject with a truthful statement!

When you are looking for a core distributor consider the Accel chevy distributor. Usually plentiful and cheap at every swapmeet. This is a tach drive unit with dual chevy points. This unit was modified for a flathead by charlieny and an outstanding job I might add!

Dual points have longer period of dwell ( coil build up time) not really needed in a flathead !!
However like the others mentioned theres a ton of them on ebay etc...........Be better served with a new gear set to match yer engine.......

I have one of these with a tach drive unit I've been saving for such a project as well.

The Accel distributer is by far the best type to convert for the flathead. And as Deuce5window wrote they are plentiful and cheap to buy. The many I have converted for others have all performed perfectly. I not only convent them I also use the product not only on my street driven Hot Rod I also run them on my race engines. The many Land Speed records we have set have all been with converted Accel distributers oh no I gave away one of our speed secrets.
