8BA Type Water Pumps ID Car Truck or?
So have a standard type 8RT water pump.
And two other similar water pumps both these pumps have the spacer bracket attached to suit engine mounts. Front casing to pulley centre: 2". wide pulley. 1: Standard Pump RHS. Water outlet to bottom of mount: 1 3/8" unknown 8BA Type Pumps 2: LHS. Front casing to pulley centre: 2 3/4". narrow pulley Water outlet to bottom of mount. 3 1/4" with bracket removed 3:RHS. Front casing to pulley centre: 2". narrow pulley. Water outlet to bottom of mount. 3 1/4" with bracket removed. Questions. Pump 2. This pump pulley sits out 2 3/4" is this a truck pump? Are both pumps 1 & 2 truck pumps due to height from water outlet to bottom of mount. The pumps 2 & 3 are with an engine to be rebuilt but due to LHS pulley being 2 3/4" to pulley centre as opposed to RHS pulley centre of 2". Would be grateful for any info. All 3 pumps are 8RT type pumps. Phil NZ Last edited by Phil Gillespie; 12-06-2020 at 02:38 AM. Reason: correction |

The only '8RT' type pump with 'U' shaped spacer bracket that comes to mind is the '49-'51 Mercury pump.

Early Merc pumps used the spacer under the mounting ear on the pump. The earliest ones were wide belt and IIRC used more of a square spacer. The later Merc's were narrow belts and used the U shaped spacer. Mac Van Pelt might be able to provide more definite info on the years of the pumps. FWIW: the Merc pumps aren't repopped.

Thanks for that, so it would seem these are Merc. water pumps.
And must be different models as given measurements from casing to pulley centre vee are 2.3/4 " and 2" which is the same as to 8RT pump snout. Phil NZ |

1950 and 1951 Mercury used narrow belt pulleys staggered like the 50-53 Ford cars, but with the high ear castings.

Re: 8BA Type Water Pumps ID Car Truck or?
Still wondering how these Merc water pumps have the high ear castings but different snout lengths. ie LHS: 2 3/4" longer one. RHS: 2" same as 8RT pumps.
Wanting to help out a guy here in NZ who has done some good for me. Maybe to contact Mac Van Pelt as suggested. Phil NZ |

Now maybe there may be a connection to the Canadian Mercury pickup truck, but I doubt it.

FWIW Skip did 2 sets of OCM Merc pumps for me and as expected they are works of art. They do look like the photos posted but who knows for sure. Running one set on the 8ba in my '39 p/u and the other for spares but doubt I'll ever need them.

The '50-'51 pass. side pump has a longer snout to accommodate the different belt configuration. If you had a passenger side '49 Merc pump then the Merc. pumps could probably be used on a pickup using the same fan belt configuration. Or put a drivers side pulley on the passenger side so that both pulleys are in the same plane.

Re: 8BA Type Water Pumps ID Car Truck or?
Just remember that if you use these instead of 8RT pumps, you will need a spacer to keep the engine at the same height. When I used these, I made the spacers out of 1/8" wall 2" square tubing and the worked fine.
