Question Model A Gas Tank Filling Gizmo.......

I saw some type of gas tank neck being sold by one of the dealers. As I understand it's suppose to allow the gas to flow in the tank without being interrupted by the screen inside the tank. Sounds good but the price is not! Can't something like this be made out of PVC for a few dollars or am I missing something here?

When I bought my Model A several years ago, club members told me about a very simple solution...it is a 1 1/2 x 2 PVC fitting you can find at your local hardware store. It works great, and allows you to easily fill up the tank. I keep it in a plastic zip lock bag and use it every time.

Static buildup and chance of spark I'm told.

I'm with Terry H above on the PVC fitting pictured for less than a dollar at Home Depot.
I have used this same piece for 20 years now with no problems at all.
It works just fine.

I have one of these tank extenders you mentioned. They are manufactured by a member in our club. They do work OK but like mentioned above, you and also use the PVC method also.

The "screen" is not a filter, it is a spark arrestor, don't take it out, it's there for a reason.

that screen will not act as a spark arrestor , old idea, if you get a spark at the fuel tank it will blow that screen out like a rocket, back in the day things were not grounded, ie our home built in 1949 2 wires to everything no grounds, gas station equipment has more safetys than carter has pills.

I have used the PVC adapter for a number of years, it is cheep to purchase, never had a problem filling the tank. I always leave the spark arrester screen in place and suggest you do not remove as it is there for a good reason.

See the 06-24-2013 thread "Refueling" for a probably-longer-than-necessary discussion of the $30 aluminum vs $1.89 PVC adapters, along with photos and other tid bits such as "diapers" to protect the area around the gas tank inlet (and the inlet screen keep-it-in vs take-it-out debate).

There were several comments in the "Refueling" thread alluding to the likelihood of explosions if one chose to use the PVC adapter and/or removed the inlet screen, although I haven't noticed any detonating Model "A"s hereabouts and several of us use the PVC adapter with screens removed.

In the scheme of things, I'm more concerned about the idiots who drive while talking on their cell phone. I started to say "Neanderthals" instead of "idiots" but comparing people who drive while using their cell phone to Neanderthals does a disservice to Neanderthals.

Feel better already...

I must be lucky because in the years I've owned my A it has never happened.

And even if it does, if your paint is removed by the gas you painted it with the wrong paint.

How about the best of both worlds, cut out the bottom of the flame arrestor.

I have the original spark arrester installed and find that if I take a little extra time with the fuel hose\handle I have no problems at all.

You do need to spend some extra time, but then again, I use my Model A for fun, not speed.

So, in NJ and Oregon, do you let the attendants fill your car ?

Also, you would have to be a fool to remove a safety device (flame arrester) .

In Oregon, old cars and motorcycles, the attendant will in most cases will hand you the hose and let you fill up.
If the screen shoots out, then it is not installed correctly.

I believe there was a video out there of someone holding a match to the gas tank opening, but the flame arrestor did it's job. Can't locate the video right now....

I leave the screen in my A's. Had a guy fill one a few years back and managed to bend the fuel gauge with the spout.
