40 Merc adjustable seat
Do the rollers need lubing? It looks to me that the rollers must turn by friction between the seat bracket and the roller track. Grease would make the rollers slide, right?
When reinstalling the seat, Attach the feet to the floor boards (with the seat belt on the rear bolts) and loosely tighten the bolts. Then install the seat and horizonal carriage bolts. using the looseness to allow for alignment. Then tighten all. |

Re: 40 Merc adjustable seat
When I had the seat out on my 40 Coupe everything was tight. I lubed (oil) everything, the slide area, rollers, etc. Installed the seat and got it to move all the way back where it sits today. The only way I would attach the seat belts would be BEHIND the seat mounting bolts with about a 4x4" 6x6" 1/4" or 3/8" thick plate under the floor pan using Grade 8 bolts. JMO

Re: 40 Merc adjustable seat
Clem and I had talked about using longer Gr 8 3/8" bolts there. This shows 3/8" as pretty strong, if they saw a higher load in a crash, would the passengers survive anyway? https://www.almabolt.com/pages/catal...oadtensile.htm
The seat mounting bolt has a stock stiffener plate in place to distribute the load. |

The rear bolts of the front seat were replaced by longer bolts. The nut is captured and there is small strip plate for added strength. Holes were drilled in original Henry's metal and the front seat belts installed. Next step is to bolt the seat to its four feet and get the nuts past the seat belt mounts. Great progress! Issue is getting past the wooden divider under the seat frame. |

Re: 40 Merc adjustable seat
I am soooooo happy to have the set belts securely in place. Back in 1956 when I had them 7 girls aboard (The same car I have today), they woulda stayed around if I had belted 'em in...
