Default ANY 39 Mercury hubcap guru's or Ford guru's

SO, not that I am that old but ALL my life I have been along side my Dad through purchases of V8 Ford's, Mercury's and a Lincoln. We have been to many many car shows and associated car flea markets. In all my years, when it came to Mercury's, the Ford/Mercury hub cap has been the "Holy Grail" in the Mercury realm. I've seen two different types of the Ford/Mercury cap, I have two set of one version, I have a set of the Mercury "8" cap most known. BUT in all my years I have NEVER seen or heard of a "PLAIN" UN stamped 39 Mercury hub cap!! Any pontificators know?? Care to chime in???

1939 Mercury Hubcap Skins - all three are different. The centre "plain" one is unusual?

I suspect the plain cap is an aftermarket replacement cap that omitted the trademark to avoid licensing fees.

Does it have any manufacturer markings on the surfaces that would not be visible when installed on a wheel?

That is certainly a possibility......I tend to think NOT as they are "Identical" to the Ford/Mercury & Mercury 8 caps in EVERY respect. One would think that the original's would be superior in construction, weight, thickness of the bucket, it is NOT the case!!!! My theory is they were made between the 3 week run of the "Ford/Mercury" cap and the "Re-Name" if you will to the "Mercury 8" cap!!! Who knows???

Perhaps. Depending upon when the text was embossed during the manufacturing process, a smooth cap may have potentially required different tooling than the other two. Was the text stamped in the same step as the main dome of the cap (tooling change required) or afterward (potentially no change).
Would Ford be likely to authorize the expense of tooling that was only used during a three-week production period?

Maybe the smooth design was a Ford-authorized service part intended for use as a replacement for both caps?

Two 1939 Mercury Hubcaps showing different pressings underneath? One has a rectangular raised portion in the centre and the other is smooth, NO stamped feature?? Photo supplied by Bobby.

Good "stuff" Trevor.....it appears you and I am the only ones who are intrigued by it all?? SO......One wonder's IF the "Plain" cap was prior to even the "Ford Mercury"......which to me doesn't add up.....IF you look at what factory pictures exist of what are "known proto-types" the plain cap appears no where??? Your ad is the first I've seen of any existence of a plain cap!!!

Trevor
For example this shot, early early. The caps appear way closer to the "Full Stainless" type caps and when enlarged are actually Lincoln caps. NOTE the bar spacing on the grill too!!! The second shot when blown up clear shows Ford/Mercury caps on the Town Sedan!!!
