Default Fillister head screw?

As I closed the driver’s door on my coupe last week, there was a slight "thunk", like something fell on my running board. Looking down, there was a Fillister head machine screw, about 1” long and maybe 1/4” in diameter. I don’t think I have ever seen a Fillister head screw on a Model A, and certainly not anything in or around a door. But there it was. Am I mistaken? Are there Fillister head screws as I described on and A? If not it is most curious where it came from. It’s an unusual screw, and I haven’t used one like that in forty years.

Check your steering column clamp piece - it is secured with a couple 5/16 X one inch Fiilister head screws.

That seems like a logical answer, but the screw will not go in. I’ve got a column support bracket in place that’s been there at least ten years, and there are no screws in it now, though probably were at the time I bought it. I’ll write Bratton’s and order a new set for the braxket.

Thanks for the advice, guys.

The fillister head screws hold the lower steering column clamp to the steering column support bracket. If the screws are missing so is the lower clamp. I would not drive the car without the steering column securely clamped. There is also an anti-rattle strip that wraps around the steering column under the clamp.

Do you possibly have the panel mounted steering wheel support with the older tank mounted steering wheel support? If you do there will be no bottom clamp on the tank support, if you have the panel mounted support and the bottom clamp is there with two screws the extra one could be a left over from the conversion and just now shaking loose from its dropped hiding place. Many cars have the panel mounted support with the tank mounted support still in place with no bottom clamp cap, which should not be there.

It turns out that the mystery screw matches the screws that hold the lower part of the steering wheel support to the upper part, BUT both of mine are in place, so this is still a mystery as to where it came from. John Hash notes above that there were no fillister screws used on the Model A. I guess the support was an exception? Anyway, this one goes into my misc. machine screws drawer for now.

One never knows what's going to fall out. I once had a Toyota wrench fall out of a Morris Minor (British car) that I had on a rotisserie.

I know they’re small, but how did you get that Morris on a rotisserie?
