Intake Manifold to carb ears

Two in a row! All years of working on A's never happened! Why? I was using a copper gasket guess ill go back to paper!

The dark area on the ear looks like a crack.

I found only the higher priced "show car" two piece copper manifold gaskets fit well. All the others didn't seem to have the holes lined up properly.

I’ve done the same thing. On our 1929, we have been running it that way for 40 years. No issues. Runs great.

You first need to know if the manifold is flat, is the block flat, are the groves on the block free of carbon build up. If all the surfaces are true and the gaskets fit properly. Install the manifold and tighten lightly just enough to get a reasonable seal. You can always go back and re-tighten after a few starts and cool downs. I'll bet you just over tightened them to much. cast iron is brittle. I've seen this happen on the water pump goose neck lots of times. Your to rough on the old girl! LOL

I know about manifold gaskets never broke one I'm talking about carburetor to intake. As Bob c says.

Make sure the mating surfaces are flat. Clean up both with a file. The carb flange moves around a lot and the manifold flange can drift away from flat also. Nothing wrong with paper gaskets.

Maybe run a file across both the manifold and carb flanges. Paper gaskets work well also.

On these old cars you never know how heavy handed some previous mechanic was way back when. Iron casting technology is better now than it ever has been but back then, they still had a lot to learn. It's a wonder some of those items have survived so long. I use paper gaskets and even fuel resistant sealant if I have to on the stubborn leakers.

Brittle, uneven, mismatched, dropped at some point, over torqued, etc.
