1961 Ford F100 4x
Cruising around craigslist a few weeks ago I stumbled into an interesting truck, a '61 F100 Uni-body 4x. The engine is a '64 292 V8 with a BW 4spd and a Spicer-Dana 2spd transfer case. I determined that the engine was a '64 because it has a factory style PCV and there is no crank case vent hole in the lower left front of the block. The PCV is installed into a hole in the rear of the valley cover with the "tea kettle" type of fitting..
I know that Ford did not make a 4x Uni-body in '61-62, the 4x's of '61-62 generally have a step side bed or the '57-60 fleet-side. Who ever did the conversion on this truck knew what they were going. Everything is as it should be with the exception of the re-enforcing gussets in the rear cab corners and the spring mounted front clip. I have read that Ford did not make '61-62 Uni-body 4x's because the body-bed could not flex which resulted in the doors flying open during off road use.

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
Op's, Meant to attach a pix of the '61 4x, I have corrected my mistake with a pix of the truck on my trailer. I had to go up into Sequoia NP above Porterville to get the truck. Really off the beaten track, almost into the snow level, I was supposed to go get the truck a week ago, however, the bad weather at the high elevations nixed that trip.
The front axle is a Dana 44, the rear a Ford 9 inch. I have a '66 Ford V8 F250 4x. As I recall the production numbers on the '65-66 F250 4x's were quite low. The tail gate is missing off of the '61, so I need one if anybody has one they could part with.. Hmmm? for some unknown reason I could not attach a pix of the truck?

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
In one of my books, there is a picture of a factory built long bed unibody 4x4, but the caption does mention they weren't released to the public after testing revealed body cracks. If memory serves it was an all white one with 3/4 ton running gear.

That's interesting, the pix of my '59 F100 4x would attach, but the pix of the '61 would not. Must be something wrong with the pix in lieu of the thread, web site...

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
Looks like a 62 grill in there on the "on the trailer" photo.

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
rotorwrench, the grille on Blucars new acquisition is not a 62 model. The above Factory Photo show the correct grille on 1962 models. It features an elongated "star". Shown is a 1962 Ford F Series 4 Wheel Drive. |

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
That's a 63 grille. I used to own a '63 wrong box so I'm sure about that.

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
Herman Munster is correct, the Grille appears to be 1963 without the black paint that gave the effect that they were individual small strip. Also the Chrome Trim on the Hood and Door appears to be 1963. Nineteen sixty three was the last year of the Unibody F Series Fords. Check out this Factory Photograph of a 1963 Ford F100 Unibody. |

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
I have three '59 F100 4x's.. One completely restored, one that is a daily driver, and one awaiting the engine, etc., out of the '61-63 I recently acquired..

Re: 1961 Ford F100 4x
I looked at a 59 4X4 with a friend of mine several years ago that was for sale. My friend was looking for a 4X4 at the time. He passed because it needed quite a bit of work but was overall really solid. The odd thing about it was that someone put an International V8 in it. We didn't really have a chance to drive since it was sitting on a corner lot.
