Pulley removal
What is involved in removing the front pulley(s) & damper on a 292 Y Block?
I can't seem to remove the front bolt & wonder what the process is? Thanks Jim |

Re: Pulley removal
What type engine / vehicle is it on?
full sized car, truck, t-bird... the pulleys aren't the same The center bolt turns counter-clockwise to remove. You'll need a puller to remove the pulley from the crankshaft. |

Re: Pulley removal
You will probably need an impact wrench. some times the bolts are really tight, especially if they have not been off in 20-30 years. I also use an impact with my puller. you can get by with out the impact on the puller. when the bolt on the puller gets so tight that you can not turn it any more ( even if you use an impact ) whack the head of the puller bolt to "shock " the pulley/balancer . this sometimes helps loosen it up, and some times, depending how much pressure you have on it, the balancer will "pop" loose. hope this makes sense and is of some help. ----Jim

Re: Pulley removal
When I was much younger, working alone, no air and no impact, I put the socket on the bolt, put the 1/2 drive long flex handle on the socket, pushed it down against the frame on the right side, (your left as you hang over the radiator), then touch the starter. I remove the washers from the bolt, then have the puller press against the bolt. Use a thread chaser to clean the two bolt holes in the casting, then pull away.

Re: Pulley removal
If it's a TBird damper, you have to use a different type puller.

I tried my impact, but no joy. Frustrated. Ole Don, if I could use the stater, I would, but not available at this time. Any more suggestions? Thanks Jim |

Re: Pulley removal
Go to your local auto parts store, normally they have free rental of the pulley puller.

Re: Pulley removal
If the motor is out of the vehicle, remove the oil pan and use a big hammer handle between a rod and the block. This is good for tightening the bolt in front, and torquing the flywheel too. Put the pan on last.

Re: Pulley removal
Motor is in, not running.
I borrowed a puller from a friend and that took care of it. Thanks everyone Jim |
