Default Carburetor question

Got a problem with my carburetor, I think. The car starts good, runs good on top end, idles real well with the choker rod turned out 1 1/2 turns. If I try to turn it in, it loses a little bit of power and doesn't run as well. I wonder if it's in the adjustment needle. Anybody had any problems like this? (Plugs, points, timing are all in good shape.)

The carb needs some attention. Try blowing out all the jets with compressed air. All carbs I rebuild will idle, with the gav turned out only one quarter turn.

Could be an air leak. With the gav open that far more gas than normal is allowed in the carb. If it's running as good as you say, it indicates the excess fuel is being balanced by excess air...which shouldn't be there. Fordfixer is right, the car should perform well on 1/4 setting. Check for looseness, slack, play in the throttle shaft and check for air leaks in the gaskets between carb & intake manifold or in the manifold to engine connection.

Larry,

When I got my car the GAV was completely blocked. When I rebuilt the carburetor I drilled out the plug required to manufacture/drill the passage for the GAV. It required a drill to open the hole once I found it. Just a thought. Al

Larry,
IF the GAV affects the idle, then the basic idle speed is too FAST. The GAV is just an extra jet to supplement the MAIN jet when needed. Go to www.modelabasics.com They have some excellent schematics to take the "MYSTERIES" out of carb functions. Study them, and you'll go, "Ah Ha, Ah Ha, I see! it's not ROCKET SCIENCE!" Bill W.

I appreciate all your responses. Bill, what a helpful website. I'm sure I can use that for other things in the future as well. I'm headed out to take the carb off now and see what happens. I'll let you know how I come out.
