Default Slant windshield car windshield frames.

I am curious. What is the story behind stainless windshield frames for cars such as A400's? Were they original Ford issue or replacement parts? How common/rare are they? Were they a late 1931 part? Were they discontinued due to difficulty in manufacture? Did Briggs supply these and discontinue them? Does the stainless frame carry a different part number from the formed & plated steel frame?

the only stainless windshield frame that I know about is for the early 1930 68 B Cabriolet and it had an electric wiper motor. I have two of them here that belong to a buddy. the frame and hinge are solid stainless with the exception of the lower shelf and the retainers on the sides for the seals they are steel. I replaced the shelves with some from Gene Bunce.

Interesting, I never heard of stainless being used as a frame. Should not be too surprising as I can fill a library with what I don't know.

Is this a well know exception to the written section in the restoration guidelines?

The windshield frames of 1930-31 Cabriolets. Town
Cars (nickel through April 1929). 1930-31 Deluxe
Roadsters, Deluxe Phaetons. and Convertible Sedans
were chrome plated. Windshield finger clips (finger
pulls) were located on the lower inside edge of the
frame on mid 1928 - 1931 models such as Roadsters
and Phaetons. They were painted in 1925-29, nickel
plated on 1930-31 Standard Models and chrome plated
on 1930-31 Deluxe Models. The fastening screws
were 10-32. (with #8 oval head). some heads were
ground flush to conform to the outline of the frame
prior to painting in 1928-29 and nickel on standard
open models or chrome on DeLuxe Roadsters and
Phaetons in 1930-31. The 1930-31 Roadster and
Phaeton windshield stanchions were stainless steel. A
few early DeLuxe Phaelons used chrome plated steel
stanchions. Windwing brackets were nickel plated in
1925-29 and fastened with a cadmium/zinc bolt and
nickel cup Washer al the front. and chrome in 1930-31.
(Wipers. arms and blades are judged in Area 20).

Height for sure. Swing brackets are different and drilling for wipers (almost all).
One looking to chrome ought to consider Gene Bunce's as most originals seem to want to rust thru in months or a very few years. They get ground thin and are already thin from inside rust. Add chroming process with acids, etc and presto! Pin holes and bubbles very quickly. At least Gene's are new metal from the get-go and don't get ground thin on the front.
And, buy his already chromed unless you know a great plater as it will be cheaper in the long haul.

Gene's frames are first rate products.

I have one and was able to compare it to the original.

Dead on in the size, unbelievable how accurate it was. Plus it truely was ready for glass and put in the car.

There were 2 things different but far from any kind of show stoppers.

The edge bend was slightly different in shape, only noticable when the original is on top of Gene's. On the car forget about being able to tell the difference!

He uses the repro slider hardware which is not 100% exact to factory, but tough to see. If you are going for points you would want to contact Gene about having one assembled with original parts.

Quite frankly it would interesting to hear if anyone using his frame in fine points got any deductions. I would question the likelyhood of that.

Gene's is a huge value in my book. It probably is a money saver in the end.
