Default Which flywheel ???

I am installing an 8ba/8RT engine in my 47 Ford coupe. I will be using the original 47 transmission and 10 inch clutch. I have all the necessary parts for the conversion except a correct flywheel. The flywheel I presently have seems to be correct but it hits the back of the engine when I tighten it to the crankshaft flange. My question is: what is the correct flywheel to use for this application???
Thanks, Steve

you must be using a flywheel from an earlier engine--the early flywheels will interfere with the oil pump drive on the rear of the block. look for an 8ba or rt flywheel and have someone re-drill it for a 10" clutch

I did that swap and my engine came from a 1953 f100,try to get pressure plate with the fingers with adjusting screws at end of fingers. The 8ba the holes are drilled thur and the 59a are not.

I had that problem when I put a 49 merc in the 46 truck, it was before internet so I didn't know that I couldn't make it work---- I cut some off the back of the flywheel, then found the starter engagement problem--- took apart a drive and modified it to go deeper into the flywheel, worked for many years, then got sold, driven to California in 4 days

On the right is a proper 8BA-type flywheel. The one on left is '48 and earlier. Note the difference in height (and width) of the ring gear for the starter drive between the two! Also notice that on the late flywheel (8BA), the threaded bolt holes for the clutch are drilled ALL THE WAY through the flywheel...those holes on the early one are NOT drilled all the way through. Hope this helps ya understand the difference(s) and the necessity to use the proper wheel. DD

When folks mention a 10-inch clutch, they should be more specific. The 10-inch Long type used on Fords from 1942 I believe or the 10-inch Borg & Beck type as was used on the Mercury cars from 1949 thru early 1951. There are other 10-inch clutches that may or may not work. Ford F1 pickups, station wagons, and police cars came with the 10-inch Long clutch. The rest were either 9.5-inch like for Ford cars or the 11-inch Long clutch for the trucks with 4-speed gearboxes.

The flywheels are hard to find so most folks have them drilled & tapped for the 9 or 10-inch Long with the 1 3/8" 10-spline disk. These and the 49/E51 Merc B&B clutch will work with the big throw out bearing & release fork.

I used a 49-51 merc flywheel, clutch and pressure plate. merc clutch is 10 inch and the stock Merc flywheel is already drilled for the 10 in. clutch. Transmission is 40 Ford.

If you strike out locating a good 48-53 truck flywheel, we have brand new ones made for the late style flathead engine......drilled for 10” (Long style and Merc style) and for 11” Long style. The new flywheels include a new starter ring gear installed.
