Default Transmission and shifter

I am having trouble with my shifter jumping out of second gear. I replaced the shifting tower that was worn and it shifts good but still pops out second gear. Any ideas?

Hard to tell without some good closeup inspection. Worn gears, worn main shaft bearings, misalignment of housing (missing shims where it mounts to engine).
Did you 'replace' or 'rebuild' the shift tower ? Are the detents worn?

Tower is brand new, not used.

So the transmission was not worked on, just replaced the tower? And the tower was a overhauled replacement from a parts house?

Good question. I replaced my transmission with one of the rebuilts from one of the well known Model A parts suppliers. Mine kept jumping out of 3rd with foot off gas on a down hill grade. Shifting through the gears with engine off was difficult. I finally replaced the rails and bullets in the tower and then spent a lot of time tweaking the forks and testing the tower with another transmission in a vice until the shifting was smooth, I put the tower back on and had no further problems. I'm not sure that was the whole problem. I had previously aligned the flywheel housing to near perfect but not with the engine vertical--maybe that contributed to the problem too. I also noticed that the front baffle in the transmission was missing and replaced with a washer. I asked the vendor about that and he said the transmission was locking up with the baffle. I hope this doesn't confuse you, I'm just telling you what my experience was.

Make sure the flywheel housing is dialed in, and if that's good then I'd check second gear for being too loose on the shaft or having worn teeth.

Did you check the forks for symmetry?back to back on a shaft?, and for wear?
Worn detents, I did a series on rebuilding the tower.

Tinman,

I had this problem because the cluster block on gear row 2 was worne out and formed an inclined plane. This causes that the shiftet 2nd gear gradually slide off after +/- 1/8 mile, the cluster poped out.
