I ran Smithy's and burned out Cherry Bombs back in the 60s and 70s. I've been running staights since the 80s.

I have dual 26" Smithys on my '48 Merc. Very dissapointed. Not deep and throaty like were on my '47 back in 1953. Do not sound anything like the original Smithys. They were called "deep toned smithy's" and they did not "Rap!"

If you look closely the new Smithy's have the holes in the core stamped. The old originals had perforated cores. I used many of them back in the 50's and 60's. They were indeed "deep toned" and sounded nothing like the new ones. Used to have a deep rumble at idle and you could hardly hear them inside the vehicle going down the road. These new ones are very disappointing. Not the same ones "Your Father Impressed People With".

Smithy's are fine but if you want more bark go with steel pack mufflers. I have headers with dual exhaust and I had two smithys and liked them but wanted more sound, but not crazy loud. My muffler shop suggested steel pack in a shorter length, think they are about 16 or 18 inches long. The sound is great, very deep without breaking any rules! When you hit the gas it speaks to you! I have had people ask, what the heck is under the hood many times! Also fine for just lazy driving, not too loud. My 2 cents for the day
