Engine Knock
Recently my grandfather and I started his tudor that had been sitting in his barn for about 10 years. When we started the engine, we noticed quite a loud engine knock coming from what appears to be the front engine. My grandfather claims the engine wasn't making that noise when he had stored it away. When he changed the oil he checked for any metal shavings and he didn't find any. We've had two people from our local Model A club come and listen to it. Both of them say that the cause of the noise is most likely valves. We plan to take the valve cover off and see if we can find anything wrong. He's never taken the valve cover off previously so we are unsure if it has adjustable tappets as the engine came off an old doodle bug. If someone could tell me the valve clearance specifications and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Engine Knock
I set mine at .011 for intake, .013 for exhaust, on a stock engine, but you'll get all kinds of theories about this.

You're doing the right thing to remove the side cover, then spray the valve stems and see if they all close. |
