Default 40 Front clip removal

One of my winter proj for this year will be to try to stop the oil from hemorrhaging from the engine. Plan is to pull the engine & re seal

With the long winter here, I'm planning to pull the front clip, fenders, grille, supports as a unit.

Anyone have any idea how heavy the clip is?
Need more than 2 old guys to lift it off?

Tks Gents

I would pull the hood first and then decide if it is worthwhile and necessary to remove the whole clip.

I would not pull it as a unit. The grille is diecast and twisting of the fenders etc. could cause some grill damage. I took mine off and did the following; removed the grill first and then each fender with the inner panel attached. Leave the hood in place.

I had a defective throw out bearing go bad after 7 miles on a fresh concourse restoration of my 40 deluxe wagon. I took the radiator, and grille + louvers out as well as the Y fender support and and it was easy to take the engine out without messing up the hood to fender fit. It was made easier as all the bolts had just been installed but it didn't take long. I was able to do this and leave the wiring and bumpers intact. Just another approach. Tom's advice about the cast grilles is a valid one especially if the 40 is a V8 (std).

I have removed the engine from a 40 sedan and a 41 pickup without removing any sheet metal. If you remove the hood supports you can pull the hood up higher and hold it back with a strap. Once the radiator is out, the motor can be pulled out (and refitted).

Just mentioning it in case you were unaware and wanted to save front clip removal.

DO NOT try to remove the 1940 Ford front clip as a single unit as the chances for breaking the cast grille and twisting the sheet metal is HUGE. Even with a helper, it's a bad idea as no one person will be in control. It would be a lot easier to remove only the engine. Then there will be no chance of doing any damage to sheet metal or creating sheet metal fitment issues re: front fenders and related sheet metal and running boards. Plus, with the engine out you can refurbish the engine compartment easily. good winter project that you don't want to turn into a fiasco.

I believe that fitting the new style one piece seal and sleeve in place of the "rope seal" at front of c/shaft is worth considering.
