36 humpback sedan gas tank removal

What is the procedure for removing the gas tank? Does the filler tube have to come off before removing the tank?

I just got a 36 two weeks ago. In looking at mine I'd say you need to pull the fender in order to get the neck of the tank. Then you might be able to remove the tank. I have to replace the sender, hope I can do it through the trunk.

Yes, the fuel filler neck is designed to come off. The fuel filler neck is held to the tank by a threaded tube that screws to the tank opening. I just restored my early 1937 fuel tank. I had to cut off my fuel filler neck since the threaded tube was rusted to the fuel filler neck. Not sure about 1936, but for 1937 the removal of the rear fender to get the fuel filler neck/threaded tube to come off is not neccesary.

Remove left rear fender brace (if equipped); loosen and remove fuel filler neck/threaded tube (use a spanner of your choice); loosen clamp and move tail pipe over; remove fuel line and fuel line clamp; remove tail light cross over harness; remove sending unit wire; unbolt the fuel tank from the frame; lift/push on tank and shift it to the passenger side and the left lip should clear the frame; let tank down to the left and the right side of tank will come down. This was for an early production 1937 passenger car; should be very similar for 1936 passenger car.

I believe it is easier IF you can remove the filler neck first. Sometimes that threaded collar can be a real pita to get loose. Plenty of penetrating oil, soaking time and a correct size spanner wrench is usually necessary. You also need to remove the gas line fitting, wire to sending unit through floor access door, and three bolts that fasten tank to frame. There may also be safety wire going through those bolts that must come out first. Then you push tank over to left hand side and lower on right hand side. You may need to remove rear exhaust clamp and move tailpipe out of the way.

I read quite a few horror stories from Guys trying to remove the filler neck. I soaked the locking ring over a 3 day period with a squirt of PB Blaster once every 24 hours. Used a spanner wrench I bought from sear's for $12, three LIGHT taps with a rubber mallet and the ring started turning and came right off. I removed the left taillamp to allow the filler neck to come right out. Had the tank out 45 minutes later.

I've pulled mine three times. Guess I'm getting good at it. First time to replace it with a stainless steel tank, not recommended because the holes in the top of the tank are in the wrong place. Second time because I did not get the float sealed well enough and it leaked when I filled it up. Third time to set the float so that when there was 7 1/2 gallons of water in it, the gauge read half full. Oh, the half gallon is always left when the electric fuel pump stops pumping.

Each time, after unscrewing the filler neck, without removing the tail light, I just used a trowel that I got from HD for tar, lifted the right side of the tank as high as it would go, put the trowel in on the left side, and after lots of cussing, it came out. Be sure to include an ample amount of cussing!!!

Thanks to all for the information and the video. Is the spanner HCW-5 a specific size or number that I may need? I tried the monkey wrench with no luck.

No. The tank was rusted out just under ridge that runs along where the top and bottom are crimped together.
