Muscle and a wooden dowel. Put the gasket in each side of the shells and THEN place the shells in place.

The first time I did mine, I cut it too short. Had to buy a new gasket set. Like Kube says, but before you cut it in two, press the gasket in one half of the shell. Leave the starting end a bit proud, then cut both ends so they are square to the shell and a tiny bit proud. Use the remaining piece of gasket and do the same for the other half shell. When you clamp them together, the proud ends will compress on each other for a nice tight fit (hopefully!!).
