Default T5 5 speed to 1935 Ford Pickup speedometer

The T5 speedometer cable attaches to stock speedometer. Just pushing the truck the speed is WAY to fast. Anybody have a. fix?

Yes they do connect right up. Your anomaly likely lies with having the wrong numbered speedometer turtle (seen BELOW) on your torque tube, which is dependent on your rear end ratio.

You need to find the correct tooth gear and change it out . Pull out the mech unit that the cable connects to out .replacement gears available but where I have forgotten.

First, do you have an open or closed drive train? The above suggestions apply to a torgue tube. If you have an open drive you will need to start with the driven gear in the speedometer bullet. The plastic gears are getting tough to find but they're out there.

Is your speedo cable hooked up to the T5 speedo drive?

yes it is hooked up to the T5 speedo, female stock '35 female end threads in. As soon as the truck is in motion the speedometer is nearly showing about 10-20 mph.

Need to find the right gears. Should be able to find something on this site:https://transmissioncenter.net/produ...dometer-gears/

"Jeep09" ..... I must apologize for immediately jumping to the conclusion that you had an old Ford rear end with a torque tube. Besides the '35 Ford pickup of Heard Saxon's that we converted to T5 driven torque tube, I only know of about three others that have done so. All others I suppose have gone to an open drive rear as you have.

All T5s (that we find here in the US) have a plastic, color-coded DRIVE gear that rides on the main shaft. It is in line with the speedometer cable location on the tail shaft housing and drives a plastic, color coded DRIVEN gear. The driven gear can be easily removed and even changed by removing the speedo drive housing. The DRIVE gear mounted inside the trans and mounted on the main shaft must have the tail shaft housing removed from the transmission to facilitate changing that gear. It is really NOT that difficult to access.

The DRIVE gears look like this BELOW!

The DRIVEN gears look like these BELOW!

I would bet that if you get with these guys via telephone (in the link BELOW) listed by Tony above:

and if you have the outer diameter of your REAR drive tires handy, that these guys should be able to go to a chart and suggest the proper pair of gears to use. Let us know how this turns out, please.

V8COOPMAN Your forgiven.

This thread is of great interest to me. I installed T5 in my 32 with intention of using a stock 32 speedo. Have not driven it yet (taking forever) I figured I would address this exact issue when the time came.

Hey Tom ..... Your particular installation is of interest to me and another F'Barner that is about to mount a T5 in his '32 with a flathead. He is really reluctant to cut his center crossmember (if that is possible) to facilitate making this installation. I found pictures of a similar build that make it appear to be possible with about 1/8" to spare. If you don't mind, could you give us a brief run-down on how you mounted your T5 at the "K"-member? Thank you, Tom!

Coop, wouldn't they also need the rear end ratio besides the tire diameter?

I had Rusty at Speedometer Repair Service in Fountain Springs CO make me a custom cable to go from a Chevrolet trans to a 32 speedo. Works perfect.

Well YEAH! Fortunately, there are guys like YOU that help me think of everything that I forget. I'm just gettin' too old to faithfully remember to think of EVERYTHING every time! Look how many posts I have. I'm gettin' more-tired by the day!

I don't know about cables as far back as '32 but generally, the stock '35 and later cables screw right on to most GM Speedo gear housings.

If the speedometer head in the truck hasn't been observed working correctly previously, I would't rule out a worn/defective speedometer. I've seen them jump wildly from zero to 60 mph. Registering even 10 mph at push speed is way too far off for gearing error, IHMO.

"40cpe" has a good point about that speedo POSSIBLY needing an overhaul.

Try: The Speedometer and Instrument Shop in south Tacoma.

They did some good work for me.

Rusty in Colorado rebuilt my 32 speedometer and it works perfect. Doesn't bounce, make funny noises, both the trip and odometer work as they should.
