Just carry it with you and deal with it if and when it gets questioned.

I finally started carrying my plates with mounting hardware in the rumble compartment of the Roadster in case I get stopped. I haven't put a ton of miles on the car by any stretch of the imagination but in 18 years still have never mounted plates on it. In fact the 2013 sticker is only the second sticker I've put on what should be the rear plate.

Pete, Living in WA state and having about 14 antique cars, I know the Washington State law well. If you are running a restored plate, collector car plate, or a horseless carriage plate, you only need to run the rear plate. If you are running modern day plates like the modern cars wear, then you need to show both plates, front and rear.

Sssssteamer is correct. I would add if you run a year of manufacture plate it must be the correct color for that year. (Don't laugh) i've got a friend that painted his the color of his car, so far he's got away with it.

I run a original 1929 plate on rear but not licensed as such, but who is going to stop me on Lopez Island?? Been told that if I were to get in accident with this plate it could result in fine if not contribute to those who like to sue...have collector plate under seat...Dick

Thanks for the info.
I think I will see if I can get a waiver. I have been carrying the extra plate along so far.
A plate on the bumper will get banged up and maybe lost eventually, besides looking Mickey Mouse.
A plate on the headlight bar blocks 10% of the radiator.

You didn't say if you're running a year of manufacture (YOM) plate. If you are, then as other WA residents have stated, you only have to run a rear plate. Another interesting item is that the YOM is not the license number registered to the vehicle but is registered as an "accessory" and the actual license number is shown on the registration as the license number even though you don't have the plate. Look on your registration under accessory. If you're running a modern plate I don't know if they will give you a "waiver".

I am running a normal plate now. I put my ham plates on the truck. I had a waiver on them to run the old green background ones.

I too keep the registration and real plates in my cars, but run the yom plates front and back. I've never been stopped.

I'd stay away from the DMV unless I absolutely had to go there....you want to be below the radar with them....they'll start asking questions and catch you up on something else.....

there isn't a DMV anywhere that is equipped to logically deal with antique cars as far as I am concerned....some of the states have ludicrous requirements, way in excess of tagging a modern $500,000 Rolls

Pete, I only run one year specific plate on my 1928 Tudor and on my 1941 Super Deluxe, and a DOL (Dept of Licensing) "collector" plate on my 1967 Ford F100.

The DOL/County auditor only issued a single plate for my F100, when I applied for it.

SSsssteamer is correct.

tbirdtbird, Washington state is very friendly when it comes to licensing and titling classic cars. The county auditor and private licensing agents issue the plates, title transfers, new tabs, etc for the WA state DOL, many of them own classic cars.

Oregon and Washington states reciprocate when it comes to vehicle inspections for titling.

The best part is with the YOM and collector plates, a one time fee to license, no renewal fees, ever.

I've got CT antique plates. One on the back, the other in the RH door pocket. Running a plate from some island in the Carib that everyone one comments on. "How did you get it here? I took the bridge."
I think the local and or state law enforcement has too much going on to worry about license plates on an old car. JMO
