I've done this before. Put card board down lay wheel on it. I have an old spray gun i put stripper and cheap lacquer thinner in and spray. You get real good coverage this way.I will be doing this next week.

best fastest way to strip wheel clean is to farm it out to a shop that
does powder coating. had mine done with painted powder coat
for 125 a wheel and they look brand new now. \

In my opinion, sandblasting is the best method. It gives a slightly rough finish so the coating - primer or powdercoating gets some bite to adhere better. Here in the Twin Cities, there are several places that will blast a wheel for $20 to $35. These a large sandblasting outfits that can do a rim in a very short time. Personally I blasting my own rims so I can prime them quickly after blasting, however it takes about an hour to do each one. Once sandblasted, you can see any defect in the metal like cracks in the hub or dings. What you can't see for sure is whether a lug nut hole is enlarged or the rim is bent - wobble). I have done 12 or 15 so far with my TIP (100# for sand) pressure blaster and am happy with the results.

Add some corn starch to the lye and water. It makes it sticky.

If you're in the western US Les Schwab Tires will sandblast AND powdercoat for about $35.00 per wheel.

Just had mine done at Les Schwab, media blasted & powder coated $30.50 each plus tax. They look great. Took 7 days. no mess to clean up, no cleaning products or paint to buy.

Sandblast and paint them. This is how I do them and it always works well.
