Default High Speed Rattle

Hi All,

Driving my Model A the last few weeks, I have noticed a new noise that I am somewhat concerned about. When I am coasting at high speeds in third gear, there is a rattling noise that sounds like someone shaking a coffee can filled with nuts and bolts. If I push in the clutch, the noise goes away. If I am on the gas, there usually is no noise. Going down a steep hill in third, the noise appears. Coasting down from top speed on level ground, you can hear the noise. On level ground at top speed, there is no noise. What is it likely to be? Could it be an expensive noise? There is no noticeable increase in vibration that I can feel, just an obvious "shaking tin can" noise.

Thanks!

Check your rear muffler hanger, it may be too tight or loose

Maybe inside the muffler?

I was thinking the same. Something in the muffler. At 50 mph my roadster tingles away. I think a gland ring might be in there. Either way this is my cruise control audible warning.. Jeff

You guys are good! I just checked, and the lock washer and nut are missing on the frame side of the muffler clamp. I'll take it for a test drive when the sun comes up to confirm.

A friend lost a manifold ring down the head pipe, sounded like Santa Claus coming! (YO-HO-HO!)
