Default W-18 Champion Spark Plug

Hey Purdy, I was wondering about the Champion W-18 plugs. I put them in today , engine ran fine , I coud not believe how slow the engine would idle , compared to the TT 10 , or the Autolite 3076 that I have used in the past. Could It be the extra length of the plug , about 3/16 of an inch making the difference? The length of the firing end.

When I put W-18 plugs in, the comment was (as in Goldilocks) "My, what big plugs you have there!"

Hey Dave, The length and heat range make the difference. My engines will idle down and chick ah lunk with the spark retarded even with 5.9 compression and Winfield super street 3/4 race cams. Hotter plugs make a big difference for the way that most model A's are driven. I drive at speeds up to 55 mph with good results and the spark plugs run nice and clean. The hotter plugs run better than the colder plugs at low speed and never get sooty. If a person was running long cross country trips at steady high speeds a colder spark plug like the Champion W 16 Y would work because spark heat increases with steady higher rpm. I have no problems with my engines with short bursts of speed up to 70 mph when passing or getting out of the way of fast moving traffic. I find the W18 plugs to be the best all around spark plug for the model A.
