How does the lock mechanism stay in the door? I don't see a place anywhere for a retainer clip?

On the jamb of the door at the level of the door lock there should be a hole.In there is a slotted set screw that secures it.Soak it before you attempt to unscrew it.

As deuce mentions give it a squirt of penetrating oil before you try to get it out. Once you get it out, replace it with a stainless set screw coated with anti seize and never worry about it again.

My problem, I don't have a lock in it. I'm just looking to see how to keep it in when I put in the new one. Which I do have. Thanks for the input. I'll go out and have a closer look.

The hole for the set screw that retains the lock is usually hidden behind the weather strip around the door. Pry back the strip in the area in line with the door lock to locate it.

The locking screw you are looking for is located as described above. Here is a pic of where mine is located on my '46 (dark vertical slot at the door seal). It is even with the bottom of the hole for the lock cylinder and angles up at about 45 degrees. When I installed my lock, the piece that extends from the lock to go into the locking mechanism flopped around, so I stuck some bits of paper in where the extension connect to the lock to hold the extension straight in place, so I could "feed" it in to the lock mechanism.

If your lock is missing, the anchor screw might also be missing.

You got that right, TJ. Removing a rusted lock set screw ranks with the most frustrating jobs. The inside of the doors is subjected to rain, causing the inevitable rust. Before you tackle such a job, apply penetrating oil well in advance. If you twist off the set screw, you are in deep "you know what"

That's what happened to my 39, snapped off half the set screw head making drilling it out a real pain. My wife said I invented some new curse words that day!

Due to the broken head drilling on center of the screw was impossible so started with small bits and gradually increased sizes. Tried left had drill bits with no luck. Tried a small extractor no luck. This is all the time holding the door with one hand. Had to drill until one side of screw was gone before I got screw out but damaged threads of the screw holder. Was able to tap to next larger screw and this worked and coated new screw with neversieze before installing.
