1951 f1 coolant leaking at top pipe
Hi folks, just recently joined , this is my first official question. I've been in the process of doing some needed maintenance on my 1951 Ford f1. I recently put new temp senders on it, and temp guage seems to be working properly. Temp will rise abit if it's just idling, but come down if I rev it up some.
Anyway, this morning I removed the carb, so I could send it off to be rebuilt by Charlie NY. And I found this. See pics. I've never seen this before in all the time I have been running it trouble shooting stuff. I wont be able to run it now, but looking for some insight as to why this might have leaked over flowed from this spot. Bad thermostat? And now that I think of it, it could be just a worn/sloppy hose connection. Any other insight welcome. Thankyou. |

I would replace ALL of the hoses on that truck.

I agree with Denny. Also,
I prefer (not concourse correct) one hose on each pump. Eliminating pipe in center. Napa has them.

Drain that radiator below block and replace all that hose and pipe set up.

Re: 1951 f1 coolant leaking at top pipe
Old Fords are like a forever rabbit trail. If you are bored, open the hood and chase a rabbit. While you have it in the garage or under the shade tree a good flush and radiator hose change will keep you busy while the carb gets a Charlie NY rebuild. (He's the best!)
I had my 52 F1 for 14 years and all the rabbits were caught, so I sold it and started over. Always remember, "enjoy the adventure..." Chap |

Re: 1951 f1 coolant leaking at top pipe
Thanks Chap, I think that's good advice. I'm abit emotionally attached to the truck as my dad bought it about 10 years ago, and he passed away this year. I've been able to ride/drive it with him a handful of times over the years. My regret is that I wish I had more time to work on it back when he could have enjoyed it more, and every little repair I accomplish on if gets me a little misty, wishing he were here to see it.....anyway, sound advice, thankyou

Re: 1951 f1 coolant leaking at top pipe
I bought mine to use and drive it. Continually having to mess with it is not part of that plan. 70 years old or not, it should have some token of reliability. If I need to slightly update some stuff, so be it, mine ain't concours.

Re: 1951 f1 coolant leaking at top pipe
Mmeader........my repair projects tend to creep out of control on me.....with that said....you may want to have your radiator “rodded out” to make sure its clean and flushing the block with something strong to get the rust and crud out is good advice....I find it easier to get the lower hoses on by lowering the radiator while I’m putting each hose on.....that’s a great looking truck!!....just how I like ‘em......Mark

I plan on changing out the uppers as suggested, and also thinking about new thermostats in. I've only really been able to run the truck 15-20 minutes at a time as I've been trouble shooting other stuff. Been doing wiring, exhaust manifold, carb sent off to be rebuilt, now the radiator stuff...busy winter |

I think this will solve all your problems.Mine have been on for 20-25 years.I always thought that was a poor set-up with all the clamps and pipes for leaks.

I know you got some hoses on order from NAPA but, here's a picture of the hoses I got at NAPA about 5 years ago for my '51 car.
