Default Shoebox Air Filter question (beginner level)

Does the filter sit in oil all the time or only when the car is running? I need to pull it off and I want to avoid making a mess unnecessarily.

Thanks, Brian

Most oil bath air cleaners make the incoming air pass over a layer oil which traps particles. There is usually a line on the body of the filter that shows you how much oil to put in it when replacing the oil.. Obviously, keep the filter level when you remove it from the car or you will indeed make a mess.

With a little ingenuity you can convert it to a paper filter and avoid the mess.

The wing nut on top has nothing to do with removing the air cleaner; it just keeps it together. The actual mounting clamp is under the air cleaner on the driver's side and had a triangular shaped handle.

This may seem obvious, but I had a hell of a time when I first tried to remove the air cleaner from my first '51 Ford in 1957.
