Winfield Head
I recently purchased a rebuilt engine and it came with a Winfield 7:1 head and was hoping someone could help me identify if this is an original or a remake. Note the 1-12 above the Winfield name and the "PAT PEND" below the name. I'll be driving this on a B Diamond block with a Stipe 305 touring cam.

Re: Winfield Head
From the shape of the combustion chamber you have a 6 to 1 head. Looks to be original if it’s cast iron. The 7 to 1 had a crows foot design combustion chamber.

Re: Winfield Head
It definitely looks like an original head. I don't think its a 7:1 though.
You would have to CC the head to be positive. It could have been surfaced a time or two in all the years. Are there any other stampings on the surfaced pad on the head? |

Re: Winfield Head
It looks like a good combustion chamber design. I think you will be happy with its performance regardless of the compression ratio.

Re: Winfield Head
No other stampings, and unfortunately I can't make out any serial number on the pad below the PAT PEND stamping, but it really does sound like it is 6:1 or maybe slightly higher depending on what someone might have done to the surface. Looking forward to see how she performs.

Re: Winfield Head
The first number of the serial number indicates the compression ratio. Winfield used the crows foot on the 7:1, but not on all 7:'s. It looks like the plugs are 14mm??? Early Winfield's used 18mm. He made a few in aluminum, I think only for the Super Winfield's?

WOW, my serial number is 9111. The number cast into the top left front is 1-28, crows foot chamber with 18mm plugs. |

Re: Winfield Head
If you want to convert back to the 18mm plugs, Winfield originally spec'ed those with the Champion 7 plug, which was used on mid-30s Ford V8s. The equivalent modern plug is the Champion D16. However, I've seen people report that they get better results on cast iron yellow heads with the D14. This is another place where JimB's opinion would be more informed than mine.
