Red's adjustable lifters
Do you drill for and hold these from turning by the large hole on the bottom or the small ones (4) near the top? Thanks.

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Never saw any that look like that (maybe someone else has)
Maybe it's the picture but the adjusting screw looks big. You have a better shot going for the big hole for obvious reasons. Thanks for the reply. It's a 60hp so the lifter diameter is smaller, the screw head is 7/16". I initially thought the large hole too but it is so low on the lifter there isn't room to drill the block that low, so I would have to put the lifter on the cam lobe and drill it there, meaning adjusting while on the lobe and then turning the engine over to check it. That would give room for a wrench on the hex though. The small holes at the top would be a better place to drill and I could adjust it on the base circle but it looks like I would need to grind wrench room out of the block. |

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
If I payed that much for a set of adjustable lifters and had to drill holes to hold them... Reds would be refunding some $

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Pretty much standard procedure to drill the lifter bores to hold them while adjusting. Do you have a better way?

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Wait till you see all the different ones I post this weekend...
There has to be 7-8 different styles in that cigar box. Not 16 of the same though... Thought of maybe using 8 and 8 if I needed to. I have a set of N.O.S. Isky Adjustable V860 Lifters I will post a pic of also for you. The "Instuction Sheet" might be in the box still... I know it was for the 404 Radius Tappets. |

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Drill the holes where the lifter will be at the bottom of its travel and will be where you can stick a nail in the hole and pass thru where there is a hole in the lifter. I do not know about the 60 but tried those Johnson holder levers years ago one time and always drilled a hole after that.

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
I used a set of Red's lifters in the 37 221 I just rebuilt. Drilled the holes at the bottom of the lifter bores and cut away the margin of the lifter bores at the top to get better access with an end wrench. I use an L shaped allen wrench to push through the hole and into the lifter to hold it from rotating. Ground a 7/16" open end wrench to better fit. Works slick.

Just about every flathead book ever written has this information, and much more.

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Yup drill the holes in the lower part of lifter bore and you are done.
Don't know why you state there is no room, easily drilled. ???????? R |

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Ha ha, best off adjusting out of the block.... just assemble the valve and guide, slap in hole, measure using feeler gauges then use a micrometer while the lifter is out of the block to set the lash by measuring the lifter and either adding or subtracting.
Going thru same thing on my v860. However i could not bring myself to spend 330.00 on a set of adjustables, so im grinding stems instead.... |

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
No, never heard back. Did more measuring, the bottom hole in the lifter sits below the casting area for the lifter bores. I would have to grind into the casting area of the camshaft bore substantially and then drill holes. Not going to do that. That leaves the .120 diameter top holes, which I believe are the ones intended for holding the lifter. So that is what I am going with, after I work the tight adjusters loose a bit so I don't snap something off in the holes. Also going to grind wrench reliefs.

Re: Red's adjustable lifters
Call H&H first. I think they may have been who made the lifters.??
I wouldn't relieve the top of the liter bore, they are pretty short as they are and could cause wear problems. Best way is to adjust the lifter while its out of the bore. Its really not that time consuming or difficult... Curious, what lash specs are you going with? |
