Default Need some advice please - Y block

I have a 272 that was running great until I made a stupid mistake and mounted a valve cover upside down( after new gasket install)

Started up and realized the rockers were hitting the cover. I dropped a push rod. I got the push rod back in place and adjusted the valve lash. Now I have backfire and seems like it is out of timing.

I tried to adjust timing but no fix yet....what else should I check?

could this have damaged a lifter or maybe timing chain skipped?

I am a novice so I would appreciate any suggestions

thanks

Bryan

you probably have the valve adjusted to tight and it is holding the valve open when it should be closed.

Jim,

I checked the valve lash and set everything to .016". ran a little better but still very rough.

I agree with AJ, .016 is a little tight. Ford says .019 for a stock cam, set while hot. If your cam isn't stock then go by the cam grinder's spec.

Did you check all the pushrods and make sure there aren't more bent ones?

The solid pushrods can be bent back straight with a hammer and a flat chunk of wood. A backfire means one rocker is too tight. >016 is not too tight, but must be adjusted at the base of the cam.

To adjust valves on a Y block Ford or Mercury.
With Motor at TDC, adjust cyl. one, I and E.
Two, I.
four E.
Five E.
Seven I.
Turn crank 180* 1/2 turn, adj. Four I.
Five I.
Six E.
Eight E.
Turn crank 270*,3/4 turn adj. Two E
Three I and E.
Six I.
Seven I.
Eight I.
This will work on all but the wildest cams. The books call for .019 or .018. Iskenderian says the gap can be adjusted down to much less to increase dwell and lift. If the ends of the rockers are dished, they can be ground for very little money if you find an old machinist with equipment who can do the work.
Print it out if you can.
