650-16 or 700-16 tires for out 1946 project truck
Coker tire has offered two options for tires for our project truck. I would like to know opinions on a set of 650-16 Garfield blackwalls or Firestone 700-16 black. I am leaning toward the Garfields but would like to hear any suggestions. Thanks!

Both would work. The 700-16 is a slightly taller tire (30.4 versus 29.1) than the 650s. Personally, I prefer the pie crust edge of the Firestone version and have them on a 49.

IIRC 650 x 16 was the original size that came on them when new. Given the scarcity of tires just after WW-2 I don't think they offered many options. The 1945 models came with a spare wheel but no tire.

I'd go 6.50s front and 7.00s rear, but preferably in a matching pattern. My 41 has 6.50s all round.

I realize this is not a direct answer to your question but I switched to Coker American Classic radials on my '41 1/2 ton from bias pie crust Firestones and the driveability was vastly improved. More $$$ for sure but for me well worth it. I tried a set of Auburn pie crust radials on my '32 p'up and hated them. Way too heavy and too clunky looking plus almost not able to be balanced...$$$ down the drain. Charlie ny |

I'll second Charlie on the Coker Classics. I have heard complaints, but I put a set of them on my '51 about 5 years ago and am completely satisfied. The main complaints were about balance, but the 185R15's on the front needed no weights, while the 225R15's on the back needed 1 oz on one side and 1 1/2 oz on the other.

If you are looking for blackwalls, Power King is another good choice. I have had great service with mine. You local tire store should be able to source them at a rather affordable price.
