Broken brake adjuster
I'm working on a 1946 chassis I picked up, I assume one brake was seized at one point and someone snapped off one of the adjuster bolt in the backing plate. I have the broken bolt, spring, and eccentric tab on the back. Is there a repair kit or anything for this or should I just go ahead and clamp it back together and weld the eccentric back on the bolt?

Re: Broken brake adjuster
Someone on the HAMB is selling SS springs, if that's not needed weld it back together.

Re: Broken brake adjuster
I was hoping someone made replacement bolts/eccentric cams as well, I've run across many that were siezed, but backing plates were still good.
Let me know if you find a source. |

Re: Broken brake adjuster
I'd weld it, the flat sided end of the shank is usually the part that sheared off, enlarge the hole in the cam and be a little careful welding.
By the way; I've never seen a seized adjuster that a minute or so with a torch wouldn't cure. |

Re: Broken brake adjuster
Ralph: I believe the fellow on the HAMB is also selling the bolts in SS or a complete kit for replacement. See if you can search for him.

Re: Broken brake adjuster
Another option:
You could use an adjuster salvaged off a junk backing plate. Grind the upset end off the stud, remove the cam, drill and tap the end of the stud like the one on the left; but leave the pilot like the stud on the right, and reassemble it with a button head cap screw and Lok-tite. |

Re: Broken brake adjuster
Just so everyone knows repair studs have been available for years. Dick Spadaro marketed ours up until his passing. You can still get them from me. Regards, Ron Hofaker

Re: Broken brake adjuster
Just an update, I did press it back together and weld it up no problem.
