I don't understand how it could fall off? I't's fully enclosed, and if you glue it down, then you can't turn it at a later date after it gets a deep groove.

I never glue mine. Do you have the proper pad? It should be at least 1/4 " thick, and between the rim on the piston and being captured in the chamber, there should be no problem, as "ford38V8" said.

I searched for a long time and was finally able to purchase a piece of 16 oz leather (the thickest available, 1/4" thick). I bought the proper size hole punch (I think it is 5/8") and make my own. It takes a lot of pressure to use the punch, and a hammer blow usually doesn't do it, so I use my press. I had to buy a 12" X 12" piece of leather so I have some left. If you need a new one let me know.

Thanks for the responses guys...I did the same, bought 1/4 inch heavy leather and then punched the proper size. I know the leather kinda just set in there and i just glued it in. Worked just fine til the knocking started the other day. Maybe my punch is a little small. I will try the next size up. If they are not supposed to be glued, then maybe my next size up will be a better fit. I will let you know how it turns out... thanks Jim

Well thanks guys. Punched a leather piece one size bigger and pressed it in. Tight fit this time. Learn something new every day. Now to just pull the distributor and remove the old pad. Jim

Oil won't hurt it. Chances are that is would get oily after a while anyway. I would'nt get carried away though. It has to have some braking action.

Also, the plunger bore and plunger should be VERY clean and have a light film of oil on them so that the plunger can move effortlessly when the slightest amount of vacuum is applied. Check to make sure there are no metal burrs or trash in the bore that can prevent free movement.

Brass from revolver shells make good hole punches. I dont remember if 45. or 9mm or 380. will work

Too small; it takes a 5/8" punch.
