Re: fuel push rod
You should be able to take the fuel pump to intake adapter off (I don't remember the official name of the part at the moment) then pull the push rod out of the engine.

Re: fuel push rod
I can pull it up about a 3/4 inch and it sounds like it is hitting metal on metal. Should I force it up and out?

Re: fuel push rod
Sounds like the fuel pump rod mushroomed on the end that rides on the cam.

Re: fuel push rod
gezer-
Possibly just some varnish/sludge buildup on the lower portion of the rod. Try pulling/twisting with a vise-grip pliers and see if it moves. A spray of carb cleaner or brake parts cleaner may help if it's varnish. Terry

Re: fuel push rod
There is a bit of a steel umbrella on the push rod.
It will not get past he baffle, which can be removed by pulling it up. The baffle may be trapped by the gasket. Remove gasket. Karl |

Re: fuel push rod
It is possible someone installed a baffle and umbrella type in the 8BA, stranger things have happened.
Edit, jimTN reminded me that the 8BA rod is larger diameter, please see next post. Last edited by 38 coupe; 05-20-2023 at 03:19 PM. |

Re: fuel push rod
Post a picture of the top end and post it. It's possible it was installed up side down.

Re: fuel push rod
After some PB blaster, twisting and pulling with a vise grip it came out. The bottom end was/is mushroomed. I forgot to tell you that the push rod is in an EAB
engine. A new EAB-9400-A is on its way from Van Pelt. The Push rod is 10.064 in long. THANKS FOR ALL THE INPUT. |

Good deal. That old varnish/sludge buildup at the bottom can be pretty tough, and being mushroomed a bit makes it difficult for sure. Hopefully the eccentric on the camshaft isn't in bad shape. Terry

Re: fuel push rod
That's good it came out that way, the mushrooming of the bottom was the worst case scenario.

Re: fuel push rod
I find the "mushrooming" disconcerting. Did it damage the bushing upon removal? I would at least measure the lift on the new one. I know there is a spec for it.

Re: fuel push rod
Glad it came out. Not to sound like a worry wort, but I would also be a bit concerned or at least question/investigate what happened.
The ends of an OE fuel pump push rod were made with hardened steel I believe. Either somewhere in its life it had a cheap replacement or something it causing excessive pressure or wear. |

Re: fuel push rod
No way to tell but I think a cheep replacement fits the case. The top tip appears.to have a brass tip that shows wear. The he bottom (steel ) is worn a little concave. I will guess
that last owner made it ?????? |

Re: fuel push rod
change focus....What is the best way to in stall a new Fuel pump in the EAB stock Flathead? Seems like one needs to have a couple more hands to hold it the correct place,
feed the bolts in and keep the pump in the proper alignment so the pump rod stays in place with out it coming off of the new pump rod. |
